Telstra keep putting their prices up, so I'm going to be looking for a new mobile service provider when I get back home. I don't make a lot of calls, but mainly use my phone to receive calls and sent text messages. Which are the best options (prepaid or on a plan) other than Telstra? I'm a bit out of it these days.

I don't understand the "plan" I'm on (with Optus), so I don't know if I'll be much help. I'm supposed to be $35 of free calls a month, which is more than I make, but I still pay about $70 a month. Xena uses her phone even less than I do, and she still pays the same. Maybe just carry a change purse and call people from those blue phones.

we've got a vodaphone pre-paid. No plan fees, nothing. Calls are a little expensive, but we only pay what we use.

Home, we've transferred to AAPT. $60 per month includes $30 of line rental, and $50 of calls. If we go over the $50 of calls, we pay only that bit over $50.We can transfer our mobile to them, and it will be included in the home account. (no fees, just calls)

I'm on Vodafone prepaid as well, currently. $20 even 2 months or so. I'm looking at getting a work phone, so I won't even have to pay that and I get a new handset that does all sorts of magical things that I'll use for a week! Hurrah! I like gadgets.

I'm on a dual plan with the missus on Optus... we both have the same phone and get 5 minute free calls to each other.
It costs us about $20 a month each... and we got $20 worth of call credit. You get other assorted options and I chose 100 free text messages per month.

There's also some zany shit to do with the internet on it. So I can download porn vids... and it technically looks like it will cost a shitload (and gave me a fucking heart attack the first time), although they always credit the bulk of it on my bill. So I'm cheering.

We're planning to break up soon though - so we'll have to split the contract up. I'm looking at getting one of those $49 Cap plans from 3 so I can talk to my mates for free.

Hmmm interesting. I reckon prepaid might be the way to go initially, to work out how much I actually use per month. What are 3 like in comparison to others?

Before getting to Indonesia I was using my Telstra card on international roaming. They doubled the price of international texts, meaning I've had large bills (by my standards) for not that many text messages. Hence me leaving those fucktards.

You're planning to break up?

We've broken up before and obviously haven't done it right (still being together and all). So this time we're going to do it properly, with a bit of preparation.

The final decision also will be weighted on the fact I might be moving to QLD for a job opportunity later in the year

EDIT: Is it true you can only have 4 minute showers up there?

Where I am I can have 2 hour long showers if I want. Good ol' bore water. Byt yeah SE Queensland is fucked, waterwise.
