Here's a few interesting bands in my collection:
1. Sunn O)))
Drone metal band. For those who've never heard drone stuff, it basically consists of ringing out a chord for almost ridiculously long periods of time. They do one hell of an abstract cover - well...reinterpretation - of For Whom The Bell Tolls, entitled FWTBT. Some of the only things that are somewhat similar to the original song is a semitone riff and the use of bell chiming. Live, these guys were absolutely mind-numbing. The amount of bass in their shows is incredible; at times it almost felt dangerous!
My favourite albums so far are
Flight of the Behemoth and
Black One

I think that drone music is generally more accessible if you view it as a meditative form of music, rather than one that you 'rock out' to or 'enjoy'.
2. Boris
These guys are one of my favourite bands...a Japanese trio, two males and one female. I got into them when Sunn O))) toured with them here in Australia. Their sound generally shifts between pure drone to some form of psychedelic punk rock, although they also experiment with several other styles of music, like the dark loungey stuff featured on their collaboration (
Rainbow) with experimental guitarist Michio Kurihara. Probably the best albums to get into them are
Pink, closely followed by their latest album,
Smile. These two albums have a good mix of drone (which isn't as dark and unrelenting as Sunn O)))'s) and their unique style of rock.
I have no difficulty in saying that 'Farewell' on Pink is one of my all time favourite songs.
Have a listen to some of their songs on their MySpace:

Boris and Sunn O)) have an album together called
Altar, which is also brilliant. The Sinking Belle is a very relaxing track, though one or two of the songs are almost as hard to listen to as Scott Walker's
The Drift.
3. Estradasphere
I don't actually know much about these guys, but I do have one of their albums, 'It's Understood'. I find it really hard to explain what these guys sound like. They jump around from latin jazz and funk and classical and a hell of a lot of different styles, including a tiny bit of death metal influences and video game music, haha. The sound of thrashy guitars along to violin and sax is very, very wacky. It sounds gimmicky, but I reckon these guys pull it off better than a lot of bands out there.

4. Ephel Duath
An Italian band who mixes metal and jazz, although in a different way than, say, Cynic. Their song structures and musicianship is pretty incredible, though their music can be pretty damn niche, heh.
I can't hear the songs on their MySpace for some reason, and I heard they've recently changed their sound so I have no idea if the stuff there is representative of the albums I have, but anyways...

The album I have is
The Painter's Palette. The first track,
The Passage is what got me into them.
5. Dolorian
Not sure if I'd call it progressive or experimental, but I haven't heard many doom metal bands that sounds like this. Their clean guitar tone and general sound has always spooked me out a bit. Sometimes it sounds like evil clown music. I've only heard
When All The Laughter Has Gone. Check out 'My Weary Eyes' on the link.

6. Dog Fashion Disco
I've only really listened to
Adultery, which is a great concept album. I think they mentioned it was written a bit like a screenplay to a movie, or something along those lines. They're one of the more accessible and cohesive of the bands on this list. Much of the time, 'Adultery' does indeed feel like a movie, with songs that evoke noir images, country, totalitarian dictatorship. Much of the time it sounds tongue-in-cheek, but none of the music feels out of place on the album as a whole. Mike Patton fans are likely to enjoy Dog Fashion Disco.
7. Farmakon
These guys get nowhere near as much credit as they deserve! I feel like if Opeth decided to take a more playful approach and replace their soft parts with jazz/funk passages, this is what they'd sound like.
They only have two albums so far,
A Warm Glimpse and
Robin, with
Syan coming up next. I haven't heard the two latest albums, but A Warm Glimpse was stuck in my CD stacker for a long, long time.

8. Five Star Prison Cell
A band from my area (Melbourne, Australia). I guess the easiest comparison would be a more eclectic Dillinger Escape Plan, though that's a pretty loose description.

Ah, I could go on for ages! I haven't even started listing the post rock/post metal bands yet, haha. So yeah, I'm gonna stop there, especially considering it's almost 4:30am here.
