Anyone in the Pac. NW feeling any of the tremors? I hope if it blows it won't be like the last one in 1980 (?). At least they are saying they don't think it will be at that magnitude but more like a mudflow this time. Good luck to everyone up there and be safe when the time comes!

I'm about 50 miles from it. My school's campus has a beautiful, unobstructed view of it you can see from the center of campus (Washington State U--Vancouver). I haven't felt anything, but then again, I grew up in California and I always slept through the quakes. It's really no big deal. Just some settling. I'm was more worried when I heard about the 6.0 in central California, where my family is!

We've had a few quakes here in Spokane and I guess ours are a bit different from the ones you have in CA. We are on a basalt shelf so the soil doesn't absorb the shock like it does in CA and there's no fault heaves like in CA. Ours are like someone shaking a large table. A few years ago we had a whole bunch in a few days. It was pretty trippy.

Haven't felt anything here in the South Sound area (Tacoma, etc.). The town where I work is in a valley, basically an ancient riverbed (as is much of the area from Olympia to Seattle). Great soil for growing things, but not so great where there is an earthquake. In 2001 we had a 6.9 (I think). I remember the ground just continuing to move back and forth for several minutes afterwards. I was watching the cars parked on the street roll forward and backwards, forward and backwards...pretty freaky.

I was in a 6.8 or so in Yellowstone Park years ago (as a kid). Hiking through the hot springs/geyser area is NOT where you want to be during a earthquake. Fortunately we were able to dodge the falling trees while running out of the woods! :yell:

Let's hope Mt St Helens remains calm(ish). I don't know if we will see anything like the 1980 eruption - half the mountain was blown away back then (well, maybe not half, but a LOT). o_O

Hope everyone is doing well, volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes aside...

I remember the big one near Fort Lewis a couple of years ago (Lewis is 10 miles from the epicenter, so we felt it very strong). I was in the company office when I first noticed it. I thought the roofers accidentally collapsed the roof, so me and my sergeant ran out, thinking the building was going to fall apart on us. When we got out, and we saw the concrete doing waves and cars bouncing up and down. I was still relative new to Washington, and I didn't know earthquakes happen here, so I thought it was an aftershock from California. I was just thinking it was SF in 89 all over again or much worse. I called home right away and got the good news that it didn't come from Cali. :Spin:

Hope to be up there for a last big mtn bike ride while the weather is decent. There's an awesome loop up to the Plains of Abraham, Windy Ridge & Spirit Lake, so maybe we'll feel a couple shakes. Have'nt been up since last year and it'd be f'd up to miss this year...

Apparently they flew a chopper into the mouth of the crater and all today. It's not goin to be big atleast not like one in '80. Hope it stays that way...
We did feel a bit of shakin last night here in Portland and thought there was a quake but there wasn't anything in the news about a real quake....must have just been the loud music (everyone around here likes to play it loud :p) lol

Well stay safe everyone here in the NW.

You might have to reload this page, because it's pretty busy, but here is the "volcano cam" located at Mt. St. Helens, about 5 miles from the crater:

http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/msh/

I heard this morning that "they" are now saying an explosion is likely, but like others have noted in this thread, it should be small in comparison to the "big one" in 1980.

Madaxxman, I think I would pick another place to go mtb riding in the near future. Whistler bike park is still open for another week or 2. ;)

So far the only trails closed are closed to mtn bikes anyway. If there are more closings, we'll head to Lewis River trails. Whistler would be incredible! Have only ski'd & boarded up there. Too far away, though. The way St Helen's trails are closed now, it looks like it will blow north if it does and we stay pretty much east.

Whistler is a great place for riding...not just the bike park but there a lots of great XC trails around the area. Lots of great bars and restaurants too. Unforunately I didn't get to ride any of the XC trails this summer, due to my ass-over-applecart crash on my first day up there, breaking some ribs and messing up my arm as well...basically spent most of my Whistler vacation laying down, taking painkillers, and then going out drinking when the pills wore off! o_O I wanted to do one of the ATV tours but that will have to wait until all dem bones heal.

But you should defintely plan a trip up there next summer...you will like it. Make sure to bring or rent a downhill bike and protective gear for the park, though...you may regret it otherwise! :dopey:

OK, to make this post ON-topic....St Helens is still rumbling pretty good today, it seems...keeping an eye on it here (or on the webcam, at least).

Have a great day everyone!

LG in Tacoma

:dopey: Well, Mt St Helens started erupting today at noon...looks like mostly steam and ash at this point. Pretty much what the geologists had been predicting. Hopefully everyone will be safe in the area.

Yes, our thoughts are with you all up there, but it seems the news has been good so far. BTW Did you catch it on your webcam, LG? It must be quite amazing to be so close. Stay safe, all!

We got the news alert recently that anyone within a few miles of the volcano needs to evacuate because it is going to erupt within the next 24 hours. Geologists are expecting a small amount of magma and maybe some minor flooding (when the icecap melts). Honestly, I can't wait to see it! I just hope it's small enough to be an ecological benefit without doing any damage to those who live in the immediate vicinity.

Hey Aja,

Fortunately that webcam view is not out my living room window! :) I am actually in Tacoma, about 100 miles away, thank goodness.

That webcam is owned (I guess) by the National Park or the USGS people...they say they got the eruption on cam, and they will be posting the pics this coming week...BUT...

Now apparently the whole thing is set to erupt much more violently, really soon. They kicked everyone out of the visitor's center (where the webcam is). Hopefully this won't flood the rivers too badly down there.

As long as it's not Mt Rainier erupting, we'll be OK up here...if that one goes, we're pretty screwed! :erk:

I heard it was getting more serious, sure hope it doesn't turn out to be a big mess. Makes ya realize how vulnerable we little humans are when it comes to Mother Nature. First Florida, where everyone's dealing with the aftermath of the hurricanes, now this.

It would be fascinating to see the pics though. Please post a link if you know of one. Thanks!
