MP3 Management.

Yes, spend 10 minutes to create a folder for each band, then put them in :grin:

Yeugh!

I sort my mp3s by album and have strict rules on how to name them and the id3 tags. I have to since I have close to 20000 metal mp3s.

I have about 4500, and I try to keep em reasonably organised, but I'm lazy. I have directories for major genres, like jazz, metal, classical, etc, and then band directories in those.

And I try to maintain all my ID3 tags, and I hate downloading files to find that they aren't tagged.

!!!! On how many hard drives????

I burn them on cds, about 160 cds. I have this sick habit of collecting mp3s. I only listen to them if its a new album that isnt out yet or if its an album that I perhaps should buy.

Try "Tag & rename"
It's an awesome program that can write tags by fidning the album in a database online. It can be used to rename files easily also.

You know oyo is right, but if you had planned ahead like i did and put every full and sometimes parcial album in a folder with its correspondent name, it would be a neat 8 cds and 1gb on hdd collection that its perflectly organized.

I wish i could say that about the rest of the stuff in my life

Edit: This borders the on topic area, so ill let you off with a warning this time.

Does anyone know about portable mp3 players? I would like to get one for my car, something that holds thousands of songs. That would be awesome.

DITTO TO THAT! Except i make SURE to decode and re-encode at 160 Bitrate... i don't like any other bitrate. And i just remove all the ID tags... what the fuck good are they? i know what album each is from and whatnot. I also have around 4500 MP3's.

Bastard! i have about 16000 :D.....I'LL GET YOUUUU!!! :D (heheh...i'm just kidding around....i do have about 16-17 thousand of em tho...)

I'm not going to go as far as to say that this is my forte, but I spent a month or more collaborating and reorganising the mp3 collections of a couple of friends, and have only used one program to do it....

Anyways, I'd have to say go with a program calle d"Helium2: Tag and rename Edition" (the '2' is meant to be upper case, but I can't find the function up the top:blush:) There are other versions, but you have to purchase them. The ONLY thing that this program doesn't do, which is higly annoying, is put a leading '0' in front of the track numbers on the ID3 tags. This messes up the order, unless you sort playlists by filename.

The main thing to do is make sure you get the way your going to order your songs (file structure) right the first time, it's a pain in the ass to change as you go:mad: .

Oh and I got one question for anyone that may know: Can CDDB only be used during the process of ripping a CD, or can it be done once in a mp3 state (if so I wasted a shit load of time when I sorted my collection)

Last thing. @ slipknot isn't metal and at the gates:

:p :p :p

Unfair!!! I only have 8000 odd mp3's, I need a burner!!! My HD is full!!!!:waah:

Tag & rename can rename files and add id3tags to already existing mp3s by just scanning the folder and files and comparing it to albums in the cddb. I use it when I download whole albums which are named in a horrible way. One - two - three clicks and all my mp3s are named the way I want it and have the proper id3tags, which to me are very important. Bumblefoots comment about not needing id3tags is not even worth commenting.

rename my mp3's to "Band - Song Name" format....i then have playlists for each full album i have downloaded...i try to make sure i have no more than 1000 mp3's because having to much media slows down your comp considerably

you mean you have all your songs in one folder?

I have my mp3's sorted by

* Type of music, like; Metal/Rock/projects....
* Band
* Album
* and song names with album name and track number like;
"Opeth - Morningrise - 01 - Advent"

And they are in good order I think. :D

No, I have every album in a separate folder named "Band name - Album name" and then the files are named 01 - Name of song.

I've had MP3 players - ones from Diamond w/64mb that hold barely an albums worth. There is the Creative Nomad or Archos Jukebox - both with 20gb HD options - they'll run around $300. I decided to buy a RioVolt - it's a CD player, FM radio, and plays MP3 CD's. I figure I get around 100-110 songs per CD @192kbps, which is fine by me.

I just spent ages categorizing them... All into little categories. They were getting out of hand...

It's all good now, they are all seperated into bands and then into album sub-directories.

Sweeeeeeet. I've got a few thousand of the little buggers, but it didn't really take to long to sort them.
