I remember people saying that this was pretty good stuff, so I checked out this album. I find the production extremely frustrating in that I have to listen so damn hard to hear anything. It sounds like there are some good ideas on this album, but they're so hard to pull out. I can tell the difference between raw production and bad production, and this thread isn't about that. Did I possibly download a bad rip, or a bootleg? Or is this normally that difficult? Is there any other Mutiilation or bands of the ilk that are a bit better produced? I don't like having to double the volume on my speakers to make out anything.

See, that is the thing w/Mutiilation (and the other black legion bands, for that matter), the poor production is part of their "thing". So, sure there are a billion other bands that sound a lot like them, but they all have poor production. Know what I mean?

Mike.

I mean, it's not even like the production is raw. I was expecting raw production, but this was just bad. Perhaps I did get a bad bootleg or something. I'm probably going to check out the other album and see if there's a marked improvement.

I've heard that one of the bootlegs is of terrible quality, but the mp3s I have are fine.
the new bootleg/re-release (depending on who you ask...) on tragic empire recs. is fine, but it is "re-mastered" which means they've fucked around with the EQ a bunch so the bass drum, among other things, stands out more. really a matter of taste which you like more. most likely, if you downloaded something... it's SUPPOSED to sound like that. yes it makes transilvanian hunger sound polished. get over it

ANYHOO, excellent fucking album. see, i don't really buy into the LLN hype a lot, but this album actually has some excellent, excellent songwriting. listen properly to "magical shadows of a tragic past" a few times...

I tend to agree. The album sounds like it could be a good one, but this one is just impossible to figure out what is going on. Remains...is definitely better.

To be honest I've never given either Remains or Vampires a proper listen, I was probably playing solitaire at the same time or doing something equally enthralling. I have noticed however that when Mutiilation comes up, the only song that ever gets mentioned by name is Magical Shadows of a Tragic Past. Don't they have any other noteworthy songs? :loco:

^The post above me is the first exception I've seen.

there is a cd version and an LP mix,,, the cd version has a better mix,,, or so i've been led to believe.

Get remains of a ruined dead cursed soul too. I also aggree it is better.

"Don't they have any other noteworthy songs?"

Yes,,, every song off the two albums being discussed are as good as this song.

they do, but that song is ONE OF THE BEST BM SONGS EVER type material. most of "vampires" is good to excellent in quality. "black imperial blood", "tears of a melancholic vampire", etc.
