My drumsound (Pearl/Sabian recorded with 7 mics) opinions, tipps?

Do you mean, if I used replacement? ALL is real except the snare. Toms, kick and overheads are miked. I played it live, yes. But I´m actually more in playing guitar :)

Very cool man! One day I hope to get a real kit somewhere in my house where I can mess around mic'ing it up etc.

7 mics aswell! What configuration did you use?

:kickass:

Thank you very much, dude :) I just save money for better microphones..I only use some not expensive Samson 7kit mics. For the snare I usually use a shure sm57, but this is replaced in this case.

I use a Mackie onyx 1640 console firewire...I love the mackie preamps, highly recommended for drum recording.

Wow I was looking at them not long ago, since they were cheap I didn't know how good they would sound but if you used those that really gives me a good idea! Even that kick drum is mic'd using the Samson kick mic?

Absolutely YES. Especially the kickdrum microphone is awesome for this price! It was an insider Tipp. A well experienced engineer recommended me this 7kit.

Damn you can get the set for £145, thats really good value. The overhead mics would be the biggest "tell tale" of a cheap set, are they any better than those C2...behringers or whatever they are called which everybody raves about on a budget?

Hey Felix, hard for me to tell when it's just drums by themselves, but it sounds pretty damn good dude! There's a little too much attack on the toms for me (too much click, not enough "DOOOOOOOM" resonance), but it's one of the best mic'ed kick tracks I've heard! Something strange about the snare though; it has kind of a harsh attack, yet a strange boxiness to it; is it 100% replaced, or just sample blended? Or maybe it's the sample being mixed with the snare from the overheads that's sounding weird (the cymbals all sound great by the way!). Yeah, the snare is just a bit too harsh IMO, and could use a cut maybe around 1k (though don't hold me to that one) to get rid of the boxiness that I hear. Great job overall though dude! Also awesome reverb on the snare!

EDIT: Actually, I'm thinking more around 700 is the problem region I'm hearing the snare for its boxiness (and like 6-8k for the harshness)

This I don´t know, but I think you cannot do wrong for 145 pounds. Admittedly I think a professional like Andy Sneap would laugh about it. I worked with it a couple of years, so I´m in search of betterment. I will inform me here on this forum...maybe some Sennheiser.

YES! You liked it :kickass: I must admit, I´m very glad so. Although you are not that into recording drums, I know you have two more than well functioning ears.

The real overheads are mixed with the replaced snare signal, indeed! I think that is the reason why it sounds a bit weird. I will check the 700 region and the 6-8 khz. Thanks, dude :) I appreciate the time, you had spend for it.

I would love to hear this with the real snare.... "that's where the fun is."

Nice kick, but the toms are a little smeared. Check for phase issues with the overheads & don't overdo it with any reverb.

Thanks so much for your time, Oz :kickass: I appreciate it A LOT! :notworthy

Now you unleashed some more ambition in me. I will do so, but first I have to buy a really good sounding snare. The reason for replacement was my crappy pearl export snare..aaargh hate it!!

Google translator cannot say, what means: SMEARED. Maybe someone can help me with that? :)

I will check the reverbs and the phase issues (my worst enemy).

Greetz,

Felix

Hey Felix, comparing the first to the second, the roominess is cool in the first, but I MUCH prefer the snare in the second, it doesn't have that weird boxiness anymore. When you say "got rid of the room," do you mean reverb? Or did you have room mics set up? Also, "smear" means like to mess things up in a jumble, like you smear peanut butter on bread or smear motor oil on glass (I don't know why anyone would do that, but it's a good way to visualize  ). So I guess Oz means toms sound a little smeared in terms of phasing between the close mics and the overheads.

hahaha *smear* This word is funny :) I certainly mean reverb in this case. Thanks dudes :) I´m sure, I will come slowly nearer the drumsound I can live with. This boxiness is present, but I´m really in love with this reverb on the first version. I fear this boxiness also could come from the reverb. When I switch round the reverb preferences, some kind of phasing sounding element is added..(it´s so difficult to describe it for me in english) aaargh.

Important for me: Do you hear some phasing issues in the second version?

I like it! Sounds better than my attempt at micing up my kit, also a Pearl Export (not the old exports though, mine is from the newer editions with Mirror Chrome finish and all shit haha, power metuuuuuuuuuuuuuuull!!).

Can you tell us more about the kick? Where did you put the mic, is there any dampening in the kick, what heads, how is the tuning etc etc? :) If I don't sample replace my kick, it usually sounds like ... fuck. Granted, I suck at micing up probably, so I kinda need sample replacement :|
