Hey guys,
today I was listening to Unearth's III: In the Eyes of Fire again and once again I fell in love with the overall sound of that album.

So, does anybody have some insights in the mix? I know they used vht super leads with vht cabs for rhythm-guitars and some marshalls for leads (i guess ken susi's jcm800). I wonder how much guitar-tracks there are ... I can only hear two rhythm-tracks and one or two lead-tracks (depending on the lead-part).

I totally dig that drum-sound. It's pretty thick and "warm" (if you could call a drumset warm :D) and untypically not really aggressive. I love it how the kick and the snare "support" the crunch on the palm-mutes of the guitars.

So, anybody got some more infos?

Cheers and happy holidays!

Yeah right ... they also didn't use a click-track.

I'm pretty sure they used the vht's (to be correct Pitbull UltraLeads). Read that in an interview with one of the guitar players - unfortunately I can't find it at the moment. On the last record though they used 5150's.

P.S.: Frohe Weihnachten nach Lübeck ;)

two words:

Terry Date

:)

:)

I like the production on that album has well. It sounds very "live" (seems to have only 2 rythm guitar tracks, and the drums sound very natural), which i like.

I remember last time i mentioned the production this album James Murphy was like "Man i dig Terry Date's production (especially Deftones stuff) but Unearth's III sucks IMO" :)

On the speacial edition of Unearth´s "III In the eyes of fire" there is a DVD with some studio-footage. But there´s eventually no usefull information, perhaps except that they´ve recorded the vocals with a SM 58, cuz their shouter doesn´t feel comfortable with a cordenser mic and wants to jump around while screaming.
Additionally they covered their cabs and stuff with rugs.
just found it

terry date is one of my top idols however i was very dissapointed with III...

it seems too bland and no balls to the mix. then again terry dates signature with the first two pantera albums was like even levels throughout the entire mix. it was crazy, its like they had the same settings on everything, same setup and they just tracked the whole thing right through. i guess it is the same approach they used for unearth but the music itself is nowhere near the first two pantera records. its still a cool album and i like unearth alot but i still feel like the mix is bland and undynamic. it's funny because once again i love his work with the deftones.

+1, I wasn't impressed at all by unearth III (the production I mean)

I dunno, It sounds good to me on a sonic level, however I just dont think Unearth are that great. I actually saw them at this studio here in cleveland a couple years back with an audience of about 15 other people, real close and intimat, the actuall band is amazing but what they choose to do is very one dimensional considered the level of talent they have, and I made the mistake of expecting something different than what they had previously done when I heard Date was going to do the newest album. The singer just polarizes me, its like hes not bad enough to hate and not interesting in the slightest. When I think of the great Terry Date productions you have to acknowledge how great and dynamic Pantera was, or the Deftones were when they made those standout albums like vulger and the white pony.......... sorry , rant over

I think the album production has balls, even if the production is kinda "simple" compared to the one in most of the metal records nowadays.

About the band and the album itself i think it's definitely good, even if it doesn't compare to Pantera and Deftones (whose Terry Date's produced albums are ace)

The whole record polarizes, huh? :D

I can't compare the Deftones to Unearth. The Deftones-Records are pure athmosphere to me. The music just surrounds you while listening while the Unearth-record is much more direct. Furthermore the musical approach of those two bands concerning production and overall sound has to be totally different (athmosphere <-> aggression).

+1 billion, my feelings on almost all metalcore (that and the fact that I truly loathe breakdowns). But this isn't related to the production, so that's enough outta me...

i agree mostly, but some Deftones stuff is about agression (listen to most of the song "lotion" from "aroudn the fur" from instance) and some Unearth stuff is more "atmospheric" or something (less straight forward),like the last song on the new album (kickass instrumental song) or the songs with piano.

I feel that Unearth is one of the metalcore bands that non metalcore people hate to love. Anyway you slice it they have some cool assed riffs. Buzz is a monster as well. He doesn't always show it but that guy can fuckin cook the strings. Sure some of the songs have some terrible cliches happening (i.e WHOOOOAAAA BREAKDOWN) but on the whole they are one of the better metalcore-esque kinda bands out there. And even if you HATE breakdowns Unearth has some cool ones there's no denying.

I like the whole tone of the album a lot EXCEPT for the drums... seriously, I feel the Kick does not stand out at all... the guitars sound AMAZING, tho
