My favorite production: Unearth's III

I like the whole tone of the album a lot EXCEPT for the drums... seriously, I feel the Kick does not stand out at all... the guitars sound AMAZING, tho

On the one hand I would try to get it more upfront, too - for sure - but on the other hand it sounds good like it is and I never tried to actually "hear" the kickdrum (that's a strange habit. I've always tried to hear the instrument wich lacks presence in the mix - even as a little kid :D mostly bass-guitar, kick or snare of course) ...

I feel that Unearth is one of the metalcore bands that non metalcore people hate to love. Anyway you slice it they have some cool assed riffs. Buzz is a monster as well. He doesn't always show it but that guy can fuckin cook the strings. Sure some of the songs have some terrible cliches happening (i.e WHOOOOAAAA BREAKDOWN) but on the whole they are one of the better metalcore-esque kinda bands out there. And even if you HATE breakdowns Unearth has some cool ones there's no denying.

Eh, I suppose - but I can only hope that one of the cool ones you're referring to isn't "Endless," cuz that's a prime example of the kind I despise. Honestly, my favorite of the metalcore bands that I've heard a fair amount of is Killswitch, cuz they can write some catchy freakin' choruses. I'd still take any legit Gothenberg band over these distilled American versions any day, though, cuz I feel like all these modern US bands take only the active ingredients and none of the flair and details that make the Swedes so awesome. Hell, the only American bands I really love are the ones that sound more Euro, like Daylight Dies and Kamelot!

Hell no "Endless" is one of their worst songs I think hahah.

Killswitch I could go either way on. The productions are cool and the songs ARE catchy but ehhh I don't know not really my thing. I agree on the EURO thing though. Best to get the stuff straight from the source I reckon.

I kinda agree with you for most of it except for the breakdown thing : i'm fed up with modern "retarded B string breakdowns", but i think those in Unearth are killer in this genre, even if very cliché.

About Killswitch they have something special but they overuse their "recipe" IMO. I loved "alive of just breathing", and then in the following albums i felt that Howard is a better singer technically and that the band has improved and has found the "KsE sound", but all the songs sound the same and there's way too much gayness in the clean vocals choruses, so to me this band has become a parody of themselves in some way.
From "the end of heartache" i can't listen to more than 3 songs or i puke. Last album is the same to me but even worse.

what i like in Unearth is that there's no gayness at all... it's just in your face metal with some melody in some parts. No "whining love clean choruses".

I just won't call it gayness but I kind of agree.

Alive or just breathing is such a great record. brutal and direct but catchy. I was really sad to hear that the old singer left the band. Howard Jones may be a great vocalist and a great frontman, but the more he grew into that band - the more they used clean choruses. I really also digged "End of Heartache", even if there were a lot more "emo-elements" in the whole record. To me they overused that recipe on the last record...

I was totally disappointed with the mix of the album, to be honest. I've got a pretty substantial sound system in my car, which is a decent representation of good mixes (Resurrection, This Godless Endeavor and even the previous Unearth album sound absolutely fantastic), and this album just didn't match up to other stuff. As a result, I've only spun the CD twice since I bought it a month ago.

I love that band musically and sound-wise.

They have one of the flattest (no real character, nothing very special) vocalist. Boring, overall.

If they'd pulled an 'Audioslave' (there must be a better singer suited for these guys) they would be just KILLERS!

My two cents, anyway.

what i found interesting:
recording just 2 rythmguitar-tracks!
lamb of god did it also on sacrament (and earlier?i dont´know..)

i´m thinking about doing the same with my band, cause it seems like it could be much more powerful and "alive" if you only have 2 guitars that stand very clear and bright in the mix, instead of having 4 ,that cause muddyness and noise, even if they´re played really tight...they´re still 4...maybe you can have 4 guitars in huge choruses or atmospheric parts, but when it comes to fast thrashy shredding and picking,2 could be much more powerful.what do you think?!?
bye,pat

More powerfull? I don't think so.
In general two guitars are more clear and the playing itself stands out more. It totally depends on the feeling of the music. If you want to have that WALL of sound, you (more or less) have to have more guitar tracks.
If you want to have a more rough and live sound, stick to two or three tracks. I like having the bass-guitar stand out more as an addition to two or three tracks.

By the way: I'm not 100% sure if Unearths III is two-rhythm-tracks only. I just can't hear any other tracks.
And were did you get your information, that Sacrament is double-tracked?

actually i talked to one of the LOG-guitarplayers when i worked for them at a show in europe. i asked him about that issue, cause i thought it was only 2 guitars, and he confirmed that

Sacrament is definitely 2 guitar tracks, but they ran the takes through two or three amps to make it sound a little thicker...its still only two takes though

I personally like two takes more.
You can still get a retardedly thick guitar sound, I just thing it gives the riffs more of an impact when you can hear everything super cleanly.

Cool ... another biiiig PLUS for double-tracking :D

I love the guitar-sound on that album. I only knew that they used their Mark IV's blended with Marshalls and Orange-Amps (and other stuff) and mixed some of the DI-signal to it.
