My first label project in stores!

Just finished mixing the first song at like 5am this morning but I cant release anything yet. Im super stoked on the album and the mix is sounding really good as well.

Skins were like 70-30 Blend of my own samples from Billy's kit and then Slate. Cymbals were all the drummers own, but sampled and replaced with drumagog. I ended up tracking everything normaly, but the ride and stuff would get lost in places. So I always take samples of the kit and we just ran with them when editing the drums. At first I only replaced Ride in places but then that quickly turned into everything cause we loved it so much.

If you want, i can post like all the skin types and what mics I used and all that good stuff. Also its just waves ssl on each of the drums and nothing else exept for gclip on the snare.

are you saying you sampled the whole kit and then programmed the whole thing??

Congratz btw :)

YES!, please do
Thanks in advance :kickass:

Snare was Power Stroke 3

Kick was Power Stroke 3

Toms were Emperor tops and Ambassador resonant skins.

Snare I used Oktava Mc012 on top and bottom.

Toms I used 421's

Kick I used a Re20 up close and made a tunnel with a blanket and used a Studio Projects B1 condenser back a but to grab some lows.

Overheads were Oktava Mc012 and Studio projects b1 on china and then Sm7 on hats.

Funny thing is the only skin/brand we changed from what the drummer normally used was the snare. So he knows good skins :)

Thank you very much!

Yea it did not start out that way but ended up that way in the end because it sounded better. I used all Drumagog with samples in Protools so no midi or anything. The toms and snare are him playing and quantized with original overheads and then i just replaced overhead stuff later on in drum editing when we decided it sounded better.

How do you like the Oktavas on the snare contra a Sm57??

No not really, I was just trying something different and it worked out ok. Like my last project i tried using like 4 mics on snare and blending mics. Just trying new things when i get the chance. Everything is always so rush rush you dont get a lot of time to play like that. I try and sneak a little (try weired shit) time in every project though.

Ok Josh :D Write here please, how close you put mics, when you recorded individual cymbals:). And some info about reverbs in the mix, which plugins, and what type of reverbs. Big thx mate.

I do spaced pair of overheads like 2-3 ft above cymbals. All the cymbal samples do not need to be panned or anything as they have the image of the kit from the spaced overheads which i pan hard let and right. I mic the china separate and that is usually like 1 ft away and hats are even closer. Now the hat and China samples have the overheads blended in to keep the samples sounding good and natural. I wish i would have done some room mics as well.

Drums skins are Protools dverb Room verb and cymbals have a bit of plate verb blended in to smooth them out. Vocals i think i used a bunch of Hall reverb from long to short on stuff. Thats all the verbs i think i used on the mix.

All these verbs are Protools stock Dverb plugin.

hmmm, and you later trigger cymbals with midi? This is A LOT of work! What about hihat?? this thing never sounds good to me when it's programed.

edit lol:
ok, one question yet, when you record your own snare and tom samples, how much mics do you use? Oh mic's too? Is there MUCH processing on them? Are you damping snares in any way?
I'm asking because never done this before and like to try record some samples to blend with slate etc;P

thx

No i did not use any overhead on snare or toms on these samples. This is because when i put new skins on I set each drum in the room by itself and sample one by one this way. Next time im going to set the kit up and do overhead and room samples as well for all my samples. I use moon gels an snare and toms. Usually I run moon gels on top and bottom of the toms cause i tune them very low and they need it. Then I use some waves Ssl plugin to add lows or highs and suck some mids out if needed.

Cool. I'm stoked to hear it after hearing the quality of this And Hell Followed With release. Within the Ruins has some cool music, but the mix on Creature is pretty meh sounding...

Nope no midi at all I use audio to trigger the drumagog. I mean if you could use midi just the same but I hate protools midi personally and just try and not use it when i can avoid it. More work im sure the way I do it but I feel comfortable doing it.
