My latest work... 6505 Guitars

OK, I just moved back to uni this week, been sorting my house out and partying like an animal (and working like a slave). I recorded a band just before I left, and planned on mixing it here at university.

Just started this mix a couple of hours ago, need to automate a lot, and need to drop the guitars and raise the vocals I think. What do you guys reckon? Everything sounding good?

This band is playing with Sikth on their last Watford (their hometown) gig, and we're trying to get this done before then - going to be tight!

Was interesting tracking the rhythm guitars - the guy doesn't use a pick! Bashes the strings pretty hard mind.

Four 4's

Sounds great for just starting out. As you called it, the guitars are burying the vox a bit. Also, I can't hear much of the bass. Weird about the guitar player not using a pick. You can hardly tell, too save for a bit of flub on the chugs.

Good stuff!

I think that the guitar tone itself is slammin, you already know what you gotta do with the levels. But I would like to add that the vox and the guitars are too hot. I'd bring the drums out, and like someone else said, bring out the bass as well. IMO

Cheers guys - I'll address your suggestions. Guitar chain was:

ESP RL with an EMG 85 in the bridge -> PodXT Pro for tubescreamer emulation only -> Peavey 6505 -> 1960B cab, miced with one 57, pretty close to dead on axis. Mic pre was a Mackie Onyx 800R.

Glad you liked it guys, I'll try and have a better version up soon. I really need to work on the vocals I have done almost nothing on them.

I was not sure of the guitar tone, but I didn't listen for a couple of days and came back to it and decided I liked it.

Any other opinions would be great!

Settings I'll have to get back to you on, I may have taken a photo of them. The settings are still the same on the amp, but I don't think I'll be at home to check before December.

From what I remember the gain was really low on the green channel. I think bass and treble were at 12:00, mids at 9:00. I think I had the resonance quite low on this, and presence around 11:00-12:00.

Glad you are liking it, its inspiring me to work on it more!

i like the bass, like the vox, like the overall sound.
good work

Bring up the drums more. You got quite a lot of ambience on the drums, so you will have to raise the volume to get them more kicking in your face. The kickdrum sound is very "electronic" sounding ...

Cheers guys. Am I doing something fundamentally wrong with the drums here? or is it subjective? I'm going to give them another listen tonight hopefully and decide whether to fix em.

I'm glad you like the guitar tone - its very flattering considering the tones you guys get (Nuclearass!!!). I actually recorded them with too much top end, so I used the URS BLT EQ just to take some treble out. Other than that, its just a few slight EQ adjustments and C4 etc.

Not fundamentally. They just sound low in the mix and a bit of push on the drum group fader might already do the trick. Also, the kick is very clicky sometimes while the rest of the drums sound pretty organic. Maybe take out some of the highs on the kick. The whole song gives off a very "rock" vibe, so a metal-kick might not be neccessary ...

I agree with smy1 about the kick. Somehow the drums also lack depth a bit. In a way it's just kind of hard to get a picture of the drumkit as a whole... really hard to explain :-D. IMO they just need something to "glue" the kit together and maybe them sound more like "rock drums" and less like "clicky metal drums". However, this is just a matter of taste. Overall, the production sounds nice!
