Dear Viewers,
The tragic events at Trolley Square on the night of Monday, February 12, 2007 are scarcely rivaled in the recent history of Salt Lake City. A total of six of our fellow citizens are dead because of the barbaric actions of one young man. A gunman whose apparent purpose was to vent his inhumane and evil designs on the unsuspecting walked among some of you and unleashed a deadly barrage of terror that was in many respects far more diabolical than even that of which we read in Iraq. No apparent motive. Nothing of a jihad. No explanation of the violence unleashed. The terror in the voices of those of you we heard from that night was no imaginary thing, no scripted account, only the terrifying realities that came from this one man’s personal war zone. All of us struggle to comprehend why and how someone could possibly do what he did. And the deadly results will affect individuals, families, and this community for decades to come. Monday night was an historic event for all the wrong reasons.
It is against this backdrop, during the broadcast of “24,” one of the FOX television network’s most popular shows, that FOX 13 News interrupted entertainment programming. Mind you, decisions to do so are not lightly considered. We recognize and deeply appreciate the commitment many of you have to the products we provide. That commitment is the basis on which our business is sustained. Without it we could not continue to produce valuable news and entertainment.
But from time to time real life demands that our fantasies be put on hold. And in this instance, informing you of the all too real deaths of five of our fellow citizens, and the immediate danger of the gunman who killed them still running loose among hundreds of remaining men, women, and children in a very public place was far more important than providing you with entertainment. Our Federal Communications Commission license requires us to use the public airwaves in the “interest, convenience, and necessity” of the community we serve. Sometimes that means making difficult decisions. Except, this decision was not difficult.
On Monday night, the demands of what was happening at Trolley Square required a response from our news department. You needed to know what was happening. Some of your family members, neighbors, and friends may well have been there. You, personally, and those you care about, could very well have been directly affected. The grief and sorrow of those whose loved ones were killed and injured could have been yours.
But the hugely negative response we received from many of you because we interrupted “24” indicated you obviously did not sympathize. And the vitriolic, abusive, and vulgar language used to communicate that to us was unparalleled in our experience. It demonstrated a callousness and narcissism that should make those of you who did so
cower in shame. To insist in the most strenuous of terms that your personal need for entertainment, however dedicated it might be, outweighed the community’s need to know about the horrific and legitimately dangerous situation at Trolley Square is unfathomable. It is baffling to any thinking person. The insensitivity to the plight
of those poor souls who were caught up in this real-life drama, and the anger at FOX 13 News because of the need to inform an endangered public indicates a set a priorities that, at the very least, need serious review.
FOX 13 is not in the business of trying to correct social behaviors. But we are in the business of providing you with fair and accurate news and information that will help you judge for yourself. Sometimes that means choosing reality over fiction. Sometimes that means putting self-interest aside so the needs of others can be addressed. Sometimes it means being better than we might otherwise have been.
It is in that spirit, in light of the tragedy at Trolley Square, that we call upon you to mourn with those who mourn, and comfort those who need to be comforted, and to forget yourself in the concerns of your fellow citizens who never asked for any of this to happen.
We hope the wounds on our community will heal quickly, and that the scars left behind will serve as a protection against it ever happening again. And for those who may not have been at their best when their lives, routines, and entertainment were interrupted, we hope a greater sense of clarity will prevail in the future.
Sincerely,
Bob Evans

Who wants to hear that shit?
First of all, there's nothing anyone can do about it. If someone shot up the mall, there's no reason to tell everyone because it already happened. What are we supposed to do, go back in time?
secondly, it's miserable and depressing. If I want to hear something miserable and depressing, I'll... Oh wait. I won't.
