I wrote this for open diary and figured this would be a good place to post it as well. Here it be...Harr!
My Anthems 1/26/2004 Music is a huge portion of my life, most of the time I have something playing that reflects or alters my mood.
The Pump up music: Forbidden's "Green" This is my kind of thrash metal. Dissonant guitars, heavy riffing, awesome solos, angry vocals, some smooth singing and some plain out weird stuff. If there ever was an album that got you in a "Get the fuck out of my way, I am doing shit and you can't stop me" mood, this is it. Not suggested if you are in an angry mood to begin with, you may just act on your anger. Highly suggested to work out out too or just to pump, *clap* you up.
Reflective music: Billy Joel with a song such as Captain Jack. This song makes sad in a good way. I can relate to this song. For example in Captain Jack the protagonist is basically a loser (which I feel I am sometimes) who drowns his sorrows in alcohol (that isn't what I relate to). The saddest part of the song is when the guy starts to go back to college, but his father is found dead in a pool, and now he has to go and make a living for the family. Just when he gets his life on track a tragedy forces him to give up a dream and do what is best for the family, which I believe is the quintessence of bravery. This song, as in life, is about tragedy and sacrifice. I believe it has a hopeful message and the character reflects every man and his shortcomings.
Quirky music: Freak Kitchen. This is an awesome band that hail from Sweden and often make satirical songs. They blend just about every kind of music, except rap and r&b, to make some plain out excellent rock. The topics for the songs range from political to environmental. "Sinking Planet" is about how we are wasting all of the resources on the planet and soon we will be left with nothing. "Black Spider Flag" is about the resurgence of neo-nazism. But most of all the guitarist for the band may be the best stunt guitar player coming up with the most amazing solos I have ever heard. He may also be known for using a dildo on his guitar pickups to make a funky feedback sound.
Poetic: The band As I Lay Dying with "Frail Words Collapse" may be the most lyrically poet album in my collection. I will just post the lyrics to one of their songs so that you may see...
2. Falling Upon Deaf Ears
the sound of silent voices surveying my thoughts
regularity defining perfection
neither sorrow nor contentment
whispering emptiness, frail words collapse
my weight only stirs the ground
how long can i hold your hand as you walk over graves
you search for tears of compassion
yet find the comfort of winter
reassurance dead like the falling leaves
losing hope in your unchanging ways
all of my strength cannot save you
if you are unwilling to help yourself
I WISH I could write half this well. To me, these words convey nothing but beauty.
Spiritual: The band Antithesis with the album "Dying For Life" is still one of the staples in my cd rotation. While the album is not totally religious, a few songs are, and convey how spiritual guidance can help you in your time of need. "Times of Trial" reminds me very much of the poem "Footprints" because it conveys the same message.
Dreamy: The album that makes me want to reach for the stars is Ark with "Burn the Sun". Basically it is about striving for the impossible. How can one burn the sun? The album for the most part is about striving for your one true love and the journey love takes you on. The songs cover elation, sorrow, pain, and hopefulness. The album ends with a monster of a song that is called "Missing You" that any person can relate to.
Powerful: Manowar. With lyrics such as
1. Call To Arms
When they see us they will run for their lives
To the end they will pay for their lies
So long did we wait, now we are home
Here once again there's a battle to fight
Gather together for the sound and the might
So long did we wait, now we are home
Now we will fight for the kingdom, fighting with steel
Kill all of them, their blood is our seal
Fight till the last of the enemy is dead
Ride through their blood that we gladly have shed
I now issue the call, are you ready to fight - yeah
Fight altogether as one for the right
To be free once again - tonight we will win
I can see by the look that you have in your eyes
You came here for metal, to fight and to die
Defenders of steel, now we are home
Fight for the kingdom bound for glory
Armed with a heart of steel
I swear by the brothers who stand before me
To no man shall I kneel
Then blood is upon my steel
Blood is upon my steel
How could you not love it?
Thoughtful: Nevermore. This may be the most cerebral band today. The singer Warrel Dane comes up with some of the most thought provoking lyrics in the business. There is a hidden meaning in each line of his songs that make you want to go out and do research on what he really means. He covers religion to politics all with the skilled hand of a master writer.
Crazy: When I am feeling insane, I want my music to be insane as well. That is where Spiral Architect comes in. They constantly change their time signature and change rythems multiple times in the songs while maintaining a coherent idea...most the time. Each member of the band does their own thing with their own instrument, often playing music totally different from what the other players are doing, but somehow it all works together.
Somber: When I happen to be in a somber mood, one CD of mine captures perfectly how I feel. That is Fates Warning with "A Pleasant Shade of Gray". Just from the title you can get an idea of the theme and how the music sounds. If gray could have a sound, this would be it's music. The album is hauntingly beautiful and the lyrics match the mood of the music perfectly. In my opinion, this may be the best album of all time. But then again I am weird and not many people see eye to eye with me.
Hope I have not bored you too much,
Anton
