the more cd reviews i do, the more i see bands with no website. just a myspace page.

do you think a real webpage is usefull, or has myspace taken over?

Myspace is one of the greatest things to ever happen to music. It makes finding random new bands so much easier. I mean, you just have a band you like and look at their top friends. Aside from the occasional message, it's pretty much the only reason I have a myspace.

Myspace is a really handy tool, and great for promotion. But I also love going to bands web-pages, especially when they are nicely designed and original ( blut aus nord page is good)

No it's not really "well-designed" if it's super fucking esoteric and obtuse. I do LIKE it, but it's not really designed in a way which facilitates getting information (which is what most people are doing on websites, esp. of bands :p).

Myspace > band websites. Free song hosting, no cost, lots of customization, ability to connect with lots of people/bands/'zines/blogs etc. Myspace is the future of fucking music promotion. Of course they don't make that kind of thing like they used to (tape trading and whatnot) but this IS the age of the Internet and this kind of thing should be expected. I fully support Myspace and what it does for bands.

I definitely prefer a website over a myspace page. Sure, it's a good thing that myspace pages are easy to set up, and thus get more bands out in the open, but the layout of the typical myspace page is ugly as fuck, and they seem to discourage having a lot of information on the page. It's nice to be able to go to a website and look up the discography, tour dates, biographies, etc. You just don't get that on myspace.

A well set up myspace page can look as good and convey exactly the same amount of info/songs as most band sites, and the whole networking aspect is an added bonus. I can understand why bands are starting to find traditional sites unnecessary.

V-G: tour dates are easily viewable, I dunno what you're talking about. There's a specific thing that says "UPCOMING SHOWS", updates and discography etc. can be posted as blogs...not really seeing the problem here.

Alright. I don't visit myspace pages that often, since I find them ugly, so I could definitely have overlooked something - though maybe they've gotten better about it recently.

i think myspace pages are a lot better than regular sites. they both can carry almost the same ammount of info *sites can have a bit more maybe* myspace has the ability to add people to get your music out even more and has almost everything you need and is easy to use. i think myspace won't be fading away for a long while.

Imo myspace is really about finding the bare bones info about new bands, as well as updates on news from bulletins and blogs. You visit the band's page to get more detailed information about them once you have started listening to them.

Its interface is effective and has a lot of advantages over a traditional band website, but my main problem is with the way MySpace makes their own mix of the sound files. I don't necessarily care a whole about the general practice of manipulating digital music files here and there, but when you centralize it and allow a small handful of people to do the task for you, that's a little scary.

I think a regular website is important because it can include a lot of different things without seeming stupidly cluttered like pretty much all band pages for major acts. But that's only if the website is a good one. A lot of unsigned bands' websites suck in the first place and pale in comparison to the standardized goodness of MySpace. I don't mind if they only have a MySpace, but I prefer when they have both. It kinda annoys me how a lot of bands started out with a website and then moved onto MySpace so they still have a non-myspace website but it's 5 years out of date.

IMHO the best thing about bands have MySpace pages is of course the fact that almost any band has 4 songs you can listen to for free. Having free songs out was a lot less common before MySpace. I hate bands who put up clips or only 1 or 2 songs. And now MySpace allows like 6 songs up, I think.

I never use myspace, or band websites either for that matter (for anything other then ordered atleast). Metal-Archives or Discogs(if they aren't metal) ftw, I'm usually not too interested in bands life or what they are up too, just their music so.
