myspace replacing band webpages

Its interface is effective and has a lot of advantages over a traditional band website, but my main problem is with the way MySpace makes their own mix of the sound files. I don't necessarily care a whole about the general practice of manipulating digital music files here and there, but when you centralize it and allow a small handful of people to do the task for you, that's a little scary.

How do they make their own mix? As far as I knew the sound files are just compressed into mp3 format.

Personally I find it quite embarrassing to see metal bands using faggy trend shit like MindlessSpace.

I could see Metal Archives competing pretty effectively, if they ever solve their bandwidth crisis, and allow sample songs on their site. The lack of clutter on M-A is a big advantage, but that would probably be lost if they hosted music, since that would almost certainly require a ton more ads. Still, as much as M-A is a widely known entity here, it is dwarfed by myspace in terms of general awareness.

There are times when it's not clear whether a band's page is fan run or official, so there's really no reason to hold it against a band for being on there.

Most bands have myspaces at this point.

I don't have a problem with it as long as CDs keep getting sold etc. Unfortunately, that won't last much longer, though.

Myspace > band websites. Free song hosting, no cost, lots of customization, ability to connect with lots of people/bands/'zines/blogs etc. Myspace is the future of fucking music promotion. Of course they don't make that kind of thing like they used to (tape trading and whatnot) but this IS the age of the Internet and this kind of thing should be expected. I fully support Myspace and what it does for bands.

Yes yes yes.

Side note - why do so many bands feel the need to make their band websites impossible to navigate and contain no useful information?

I really don't like the myspace bandwagon a lot of bands have jumped on. The whole thing just makes the music seem cheap.

Seriously...

Uh...what? Why don't you check out the Post Your Hauls thread and tell me buying music looks like it's going down noticeably. No matter how many people are downloading things exclusively, there are always those downloading AND buying or those just spending their entire paychecks on new music. The people who really like will buy. This still hasn't changed very much and is drastically overstated by most people. Regardless your point is almost irrelevant; there is no connection between a band putting up to 6 songs on Myspace and the music-buying economy going down...

@ Killbot
You don't see how a band hosting their music next to ads for shitty consumer garbage is cheapening the art? You don't see how these "anti-status quo" bands host their music on a site owned by one of the world's largest corporate leaders lessens the music? You don't think a band's page full of people saying "thanx 4 da add" or advertising their own stupid projects makes the whole page cheap?

Seriously...

Companies are starting to cut back on the music they stock since everything is going to go digitial within 10 years. I think it's a stupid idea, but it's happening. Businesses are cutting their supply back by about half.

And by businesses, I mean brick and mortar stores

Indeed.

I am starting to realize that internet is ruining the entire metal genre altogether. There's no mysticism anymore, with everything being so easily accessible. Bands and albums aren't given the opportunity to "air out" as everything is just the flavour of the week, because no one can possibly digest the music properly when there's a new album every fucking day that has to be heard, categorized and shelfed.

It's all what you make of it, my brutha.

I prefer when bands have their own page in addition to a myspace page, tbh.

I depend on myspace bulletins for much of the latest news from bands I like. Things like release dates for albums and tourdates are especially important.

Myspace has taken over and is better and more accessible.

That's pretty much it. Some band web pages are fucking retarded & never want to work. MySpace may not always have as much content, but it's more accessible.

As another thing, I think it's much cheaper (as in free) to set up & manage a MySpace page. Some underground bands probably don't have the cash to set up an elaborate web page.

What an excessive thing to say.

I tend to use myspace to grab tourdates etc. Unless the webpage is regularly updated and well organised then I don't have a problem with a band just using a myspace page.
