I was dating this chick in 2007, that was friends with a lot of those "emo/scene" types, and I definitely saw heaps of the scenesters (the scene kids being the far more extreme looking versions of the "emos") back then when I was in the inner city down here in Melbourne.
They still exist, but don't seem nearly as common as 4-6 years ago.
Probably due to the fact that they got older and realized how retarded it is, and there wasn't enough kids in the younger generation to replace them all.

Thank GOD I went through highschool before the whole "emo" thing started......back when I was like 15, we had goths. Now they've taken on new forms and it's getting really rediculous.

The funny thing about conformity is that the non-comformists don't care whether or not they're comforming in the first place. I see a lot of these kids at venues where hardcore dancers and scenesters get together and swing dance. They are the ones who only listen to nirvana because it was cool when they were born and want to be kurt cobain's re-incarnation. And eventually they'll grow up a bit more and stop deliberately trying to be different.
And move onto Alice in Chains.
They're just kids trying to find themselves in trends from a few years ago, I don't see much of a problem. I really only get irrtated when they start talking like they paid attention to pop culture and media in the 90's when they were born half way through it. I know I'm from '92 and all, but the radio was my babysitter. So I gently correct them and let them do their thing.
