I know that I won't get too much as both bands have long songs but I want to get as close to 40 minutes each for both bands on one cd as somewhat of a way to show a friend what to expect from these bands.
I am asking for advice. I will eventually make a full cd for this friend. I only have Recreation day and In search of truth.

Evergrey: dark waters is a MUST as is masterplan... and mark of the triangle. haven't heard recreation day so can't help there. oh... also different worlds to show the emotional side

symphony x: ONE of the epics (Divine wings, odyssey, or rediscovery... i would lean towards wings) Then there is sea of lies, gotta go with king of terrors... wicked is good... um....damn... blanking. Ok, how bout edge of forever?? that's a killer song. Oh, and fallen and into the looking glass (live version of course!)

go nuts man!

I don't know Evergrey, but put this SyX on it:

Evolution
In The Dragon's Den
Of Sins And Shadows
Smoke 'n Mirrors
The Edge of Forever
Sea Of Lies
Incantations of the Apprentice (I don't love this song, but it starts with a damn cool riff).
Awakenings

It would be best if you copied/loaned the whole V - The New Mythology Suite album.

My first Evergrey album was Solitude * Dominance * Tragedy. I recommend that you copy/loan that album for your friend. They also recommend In Search Of Truth but I don't own that so I can't say it myself. Decide yourself.

Compilations suck big time.

Esanssi
"Must we have the other side, just to feel alive?"
- King Diamond "Just a Shadow"

For In Search of Truth I'd go with The Masterplan, Misled,
and Different Worlds, maybe even Mark of the Triangle (It's a good
song, but I kinda got the idea that you needed to save space).

For Recreation Day, I'd say The Great Deciever and Recreation Day,
though I haven't listened to this album a lot.

Now for the good part; Symphony X.
Since I only have Divine Wings and The Odessey, I can only
recommend songs from these albums, but I'm fairly sure the
songs they offer will be impressive enough.

The Accolade (A must, definately the best song ever recorded)
Out of the Ashes
Candlelight Fantasia
The Eyes of Medusa (Really cool song)
Accolade II (See above. This one certainly competes with The Accolade)
King of Terrors

Well, as you can see, I'm more into harmonic, soul-soothing stuff
than power-riffs (even though I like those too), but I'm convinced
that these songs will turn your friend over if he's hard to convince.

Feel free to ignore me completely though. What do I know, I'm
just the new guy, right? Hehe.

I've got to know Evergrey only recently but I can recommend a few great tracks for you...

Nosferatu!!!!! (This is the best track Evergrey has ever done and probably will ever do...oh the lyrics... :headbang:
The Masterplan
Misled
Recreation Day
Darkest Hour
Solitude Within

of course there are more good tracks but these came into my mind now...

And then... SYMPHONY X!!! (It's not easy to choose when there's so many incredible songs)

Of Sins And Shadows
Accolade
Pharaoh
The Eyes Of Medusa
In The Dragon's Den
Lady Of The Snow (there allways has to be one ballad in a record :D)
Absence Of Light
A Fool's Paradise
Rediscovery
 Inferno (UNLEASH THE FIRE)
Accolade II
King Of Terrors
The Turning
Awakenings

well, 20 songs, sounds quite nice!
You better make it a double cd :D...

And even though you don't have Solitude+Dominance+Tragedy, choose Nosferatu on your compilation anyway :D

Incredible record!!!!!!
