I need some help...I want to check out a few bands that flew under my radar back in the day. Bands like Savatage ,Grim reaper,Exciter and Venom. wheres a good place to start?? I just got Helloween keeper of the 7 keys part 1 and love it. I love the vocals and guitars (although, except for the solos the guitar could be higher in the mix) Any suggestions on the next Helloween record to pick up would be very much appreciated.

savatage seems like the next place to start judging from everyones comments on the banner .

Helloween: "Keeper Of The Seven Keys - part 2", "Time Of The Oath", "Master Of The Rings", "Better Than Raw", "The Dark Ride". If you get deep into them then try "Walls Of Jericho". You may skip "Pink Bubbles Go Ape", "Rabbit Don't Come Easy" and especially "Chameleon" :ill:

Venom: I'll say any of the first three albums, I'm especially inclined to "Black Metal".

Exciter: you're on your lucky month all basic albums are been reissued. "Violence & Force" is already available, the rest come in a couple of weeks. I also can recommend "New Testament" the a re-recorded compilation with almost the new line-up (the bass player Clammy a regular here wasn't present in the recordings).

I gotta say if you haven't checked 'em out yet, give some of these sons o' bitches a chance!

ACCEPT - Metal Heart or Russian Roullette
WASP - WASP
TWISTED SISTER - Under The Blade or You Can't Stop Rock N Roll
FASTWAY
CORROSION OF CONFORMITY - Animosity - when they were GOOD!
DRI - Dealing With It
S.O.D. - Speak English or Die
SUCIDAL TENDENCIES - SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
DIO - Last In Line
CRO MAGS - The Age of Quarrell

I realize these may not be all "underground" or even "metal" but what they are are some KICKASS old school music that are seriously hard and heavy no matter what genre. I grew up with these albums and continue to play them today on a regular basis. Great stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If all else fails, make sure you own VAN HALEN's WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST!

Helloween's Treasure Chest 2-disk compilation is a great, if you want to get an overview of the band. I think Walls of Jericho is a great album -- more of a thrash sound than the Keeper-era Helloween, but definately killer.

Grim Reaper -- they only had 3 albums.... Go with either the Best Of or the See You in Hell/Fear No Evil 2-on-1 cd if you can find either of them.

Savatage -- Hall of the Mountain King, Gutter Ballet, Streets, Edge of Thorns... I'm not a Savatage diehard though...

Venom's Black Metal and Welcome to Hell ... I would also suggest Bathory ... the band.. the albums to get are the first album Bathory, Under the Sign of the Black Mark, Blood Fire Death, and Hammerheart...

thanks for the great suggestions, everyone should help out . Ted Van its mostly the underground stuff i missed out on. I have all the fastway and Dio records already ....im huge into All his stuff Rainbow, BS, and all the solo stuff.(master of the moon was a disappointment IMO) .

As far as Savatage, it seems Hall of the mountin king is the big one to check out first. I think the one time i stayed in on a weekand night to check out Headbangers ball, that was the one video that i still remember.

What about Iced Earth? i see a lot of kids wearing tshirts and they seem to have alot of releases. I get the impression something wicked this way comes is the big one to get. Is this any good??Are they considered prog metal?

thanks again everyone

Iced Earth are crap, don't bother.

Because?

(insert explanation here...) ;)

Not that it should bother you, but I think the early Iced Earth releases simply rule! Especially the "Day's of Purgatory" sampler and "Dark Saga".
I am a total Matt Barlow freak! Too bad that the songwriting went astray after "Dark Saga" IMHO. That tends to spoil things a bit :)

Night of the Stormrider was a great album. I really enjoyed Something Wicked This Way Comes, too. The rest, I could probably take it or leave it--particularly the new stuff. I had high hopes for the stuff with Tim Owens, but I was sorely disappointed. I miss Matt Barlow. :(

As for Savatage--all their stuff is awesome. But, my favorites would have to be Hall of the Mountain King, Edge of Thorns, and Gutter Ballet. Good places to start. :)

The entire Iced Earth catalog rocks. The Glorious Burden doesn't always quite up to their previous record, but it still rocks.

I wasn't a fan of their first album, but that's just my own personal taste. It was a good album--just not my cup of tea. As for The Glorious Burden, I have to admit that my initial disappointment with it prevented me from really giving it a chance. I'm a HUGE Barlow fan, and it just didn't seem like the IE I knew and loved with Owens on vocals, so I didn't really give the album too much credit. I'm sure one of these days I'll actually sit down and give the album the listen it deserves, but I'm still too biased to do that at the moment. Owens just disappoints me. The new stuff he did with Priest was sub-par, with a couple noteable exceptions (though he was great live, and he sings the older songs well), and I wasn't that impressed with his work with Winter's Bane, either.

I'm just biased, that's all there really is to it. But, like I said, I'm sure I'll sit and give it a good listen one of these days. I had heard good things about Schaffer's guitar work on the album, so that may overshadow my dislike for having a new vocalist on the album in time.

EVERY cd listed is a winner!!!!
Though I go for Fair Warning before W&CF...But that's just my opinion..

Well, seeing as you asked...

...because the riffs are average, all the albums sound like they're recorded in a garage with the microphones in a garage across the road which takes away any power the riffs might've had, and Matt Barlow sounded daft.

JD - Bring it on! I'll have my BLAZE shield ready :p

Fair warning is a great record but im more partial to W&CF and The great debut record. Its all the underground metal i need to explore...Thanks for all the opinions on Iced Earth everyone, im gonna pick up something this weekand to check out their sound. Probally the stormrider or wicked this way comes CDS.

i cant get enough of this Helloween CD ..I see me diving more into there catalog, i love the vocals and the guitar.Any other bands like that is the stuff i want to check out. I did buy Savatage hall of the mountain king today .Title cut is awesome, the riff is really cool and i love the vocals. Hope to get into it more as the week goes on, but it hasnt hit me like the Helloween CD did ..I loved that after the first listien

Any other suggestions about Helloween like bands ( Power or Prog metal?)Would be awesome

There are TONS of bands out there like Helloween. Hammerfall, most noteably, I think. You might also be interested in Sonata Arctica, Lost Horizon, Vanden Plas, and Edguy, for starters. All the albums from those artists are damn good cds, so anything you can get your hands on, from any of them, is good.

Tad Morose also got a pretty good number of posts here, though many were by me and I think I pounded them into people's head. Cool band from Sweden though.

Also Panic Cell is a very good band from England. Cool power/thrash style.

Well Helloween is definitely NOT prog metal, but just as another poster replied, Vanden Plas would be a good choice if you are interested in melodic prog. To me, they wrote a whole new chapter in the metal book of prog and if you are looking for a melodic prog band that doesn't go too far off in left field and has a good marriage of songwriting/song-based music and musicality, Vanden Plas is tough to beat. Their last three studio albums are all about equally impressive. Hard to buy a bad Vanden Plas release.
