I have a predicament I wondered if you guys could chime in on. I'm doing a more classic rock sounding band and used Fat Heads for room mics. They really made the snare pop but it's just a hair too much for the kick. I cannot EQ, it ruined the rest of the sounds to kill the kick. Is there a way I can have the room track drop and come back up when the kick is heard in it? Aside from manually editing of course.

side chain compression should do it i think - put a side chain compressor onto your kick track and set the chain as your room bus - every time the kick is thumped on the room track the volume will decrease on the kick track - thus reducing the level of your kick on your kick track while keeping it on your room track - thus that will reduce the kick volume easing up on the "hair" on your kick

me thinks!

If it's just the snare you want from the room mics, put a gate on the room mics and use a snare trigger as a sidechain key input so when the snare hits the gate opens.

That's the way... And if it doesn't sound natural, use your gate more as an expander. This is like the opposite of the side chain compressor method that was mentioned. I think you'll have more success going the gate route. Good luck, when you realize this trick, it opens all kinds of doors. (Or should I say, gates?)
