Neumann TLM127, U89, U87

i did a project once where i used u87s as overheads into a true precision 8 and it was the best overhead sound ive ever gotten. the cymbals sounded really natural and full. i hope to one day own at least a pair or two for overheads. on another project at the same studio(which has a fabulous live room), i used the 87s as room mics for drums(spaced pair about 12 feet from the kick drum) and they worked well too. i dont have any experience with the other mics. i hope any of this helps. good luck.

The U87 is a workhorse. It seems to gets dogged a lot on forums but regardless it's on tons of records. I've liked them on vocals (obviously), OH's, and acoustic guitars. I think if you can justify the cost then it's worth having one (or 2) around IMHO.

We had a single U87 at the studio where we went to record drums for our current album.
Used it as an XY overhead, but also used two other mics (forgot the model) as a spaced pair and recorded both (to decide later on).

The U87 was the clear winner. ;)

Yes, SM7 is on the list, but I see it more (maybe I'm wrong) as a microphone for grunters. And I need a very good microphone to record a female vocalist.

IMHO they are better for grunters than a LDC would be but theyre pretty good for other styles as well. The Neumanns would still be much better for the type of job your looking at though

How did you do XY with just one of em?

I was told recently that one day sooner or later I have to buy a U87.

Damn, you just made me check the Neumann homepage for 10 minutes...

Looks like it wasn't an U87 after all, but a SM69 or something. We just called it the "Neumann"...

It had two independent mic capsules that could be turned against each other. The hard part was to find out where the actual FRONT of the mic was... as we didn't want to record the ceiling of course.

For vocals i found this to be a great mic

Telefunken Ela M 251 - which is insane !!!!

but I know your not after a tube, the nu

I think all are good mics. U89 for Saxophone was better than U87
But who want's to record saxophon? ;)
The only thing the U87 and 89 lack, is that they can't take high sound pressure. The TLMs are build with another technique and can take higher pressure.
Ok, the U87 isnt the first choice for Toms or Bassdrum, but I thought it's good to know.

First solution is exact ;)

éhéh, I'm gonna wait after this one !!

We will start the recording process on the 21st August, again using Brett Caldas-Lima who produced the debut "Transcendental". Recording will take place near Oxford, England at a purpose built rehearsal studio (which is a bit better than the "back room of a pub" like last time, hehe).""""""""""""""""""

Bon boulot !!!
