Here's something Jon Oliva learned from some opera people:

you take a paper towel or something like that and grab ahold of your tongue and hold it while singing scales using the ghee sound ("ghee, ghee, ghee, ghee..."), this loosens up the vocal chords and muscles in your throat for optimal warm up and keeps you from damaging your vocal chords, simple but highly effective.
