Okay, not really sure how to categorize this band's sound...maybe brutal atmospheric progressive tech death core!???? hahaha! idk! ;P

Anyway, we JUUUST finished this track which will be the single for our 3 (maybe 4) song we're gonna shop!!! try to at least wait till the track "takes off" if u can, we went for a very "brown note" heavy sound.

gear used; 8 string Agile, Spector Bass, and close mic'd drums (not programmed :)) recorded at their practice space! Vocals done in my dining room w/my sm7b while the wife was out! hahaha...

...i'd like to thank any and all of you guys sooo much for checkin this out if you get the chance to do so. it has been a blast to work with such great dudes, and lay some vocals over music that really pushed my limits vocally!!! lemme know your thoughts on the overall sound/mix etc. we wanted a "raw" in your face sound....yet still polished and produced! boom! :zombie: ...lyrics on soundclick btw!

Enjoy Dudes!!!
and Cheers! :kickass:

--------Mix UPDATED 12/13/11-----------------
went for a cleaner more polished git tone, less harsh brights....no, did not change snare! hahaha

Gotta agree with jackbraglia, the snare sounds like a can, the kick is all click and no thump, and the toms are almost inaudible. The guitars have a lot of low-mids going on that could be cut out to let the bass guitar shine through.

Thanks for replying dudes!!!

well, honestly, the guitars are 8's and they wanted a "balls" heavy mid sound, plus i think the bass pops thru when it should and handles the low end where it needs. i haven't finished mastering this, so i might do a small "mid" scoop to fix the problem in the end...as for the "snare" i totally agree dudes....but honestly, it's "exact" to the specifications of the drummer...didn't want that "fat" S2.0'esque snare (which im down with!!! hahaha), yet his "natural snare sound," which i have to respect...

I think mainly it's the entire "picture" of what the song is that they wanted. Anyway, thanks again for the honest critique's....anyone dig the vocals at least? hahaha :loco:

As far as my snare goes I think it sounds great... Very unique cause its mine and not a sample that all of you are used to hearing. I spent a lot of money tryin to get that sound for my live show. Josh did amazing matching it to the recording. People did doubt it when I first told them what I was doing but once they hear it live they change their mind and fall in love. And the kick is very fat! You have to hear this in a good system like mine... Just sayin. Cause no matter prius or my over priced 5000 watt stereo in my truck it slaps you in the face. It is all that is metal! Yessir

dude, a good system? most of us here are using pretty decent monitors at least...i think there is just something wrong with your ears...

I've mic'd a lot of snares in my time, and I've NEVER heard anything even close to that off a raw track. Personally I play a piccolo with a super tight head, which is pretty ridiculous sounding on its own, but still nothing even close to this...it sounds like some terrible EQ work, by someone who has little to no idea how to use EQ effectively. there's probably 12db+ boosts all over the place. very far from a raw sound.

first off...lemme go on the record saying Chef Boyardee is delicous! :loco: haha, and no...he means in his car system, hahaha, not monitors. Anyway, he actually uses a kevlar topped marching snare, and of course i'm partially sampling a Steven Slate snare w/it about 40% keeping it mainly his marching snare sound (i forget which one from Steven Slate), but he's saying that this is the snare sound he "wanted/was closest" to his "natural" live sound that he wanted to capture for the recording! ;)

also, i'm not a doofus man, especially when it comes to eq...check out As Waters Part...or anything else on my soundclick...i experiment, sure, and some mixes vary depending on the project, and what i like, others might not, etc. etc...! but saying i have no idea what i'm doing w/ eq is a lil low man, haha...ya know :/

anywho, no, there are absolutely no 12db+ boosts anywhere eq wise on the snare dude, i mean C'MON!!! hahaha! There's a low pass around 12khz to get rid of the annoying "tssss" tail end his snare had and a high pass at 90hz to make it cut thru nice and "pappy," then an rbass boosting the 195hz for "some" beef. i've worked with heavier snares before man, i'm more than familiar w/ good samples etc...these guys just wanted to do things a bit differently, and i'm always game for doin something different.

Anyway, thanks for responding dude... i'm always down to talk critique's etc. and get an honest opinion...so BAM! did u at least finish the whole song? :) was there something you "dug" about the track? :p

yea I guess I did sound a bit harsh there, so I apologize. I don't make it a habit to bash people on here, I was just having a shitty day I think  But my comments were really more directed at "cantdrumrite" over here. he's smokin something more than herb if he likes that sound. and this is coming from someone who listens to mostly slam-death and grind, so i know what that snare should sound like. some things sound good in a room that simply won't work in a mix, and I think this is a prime example. it just sounded to me like it would take a lot of dramatic eq to get that sound, but the marching head totally solves that riddle for me, lol.

Just want to let everyone know that I'm not a producer and I'm hardly a musician. Although I will challenge people to try and play my beats and I will play theirs. Let's see who wins.... Ok now let put our egos aka penis's away and get to this. My snare is hated by all because its different and that's fine. A good friend of mine and fellow drummer even said it was a bad idea and it sounds dumb. Then we played a show and before I could get off my kit everyone was asking how I got such a bad ass tone out of my snare. Even my boy that said it was a dumb idea. Like I said I'm not a musician I just smash better and harder than most... Ok I'll put it away for reals now. So I told josh I want my live sound because it is well known and liked and nobody else does that. This song is by far our easiest one for me to play. Our other songs you will hear soon have a lot of blasting where the snare will really shine so just wait for that. And you gotta remember this is no teeny bop music this is metal. I know you are not into metal but do a little research and see how different it is. Repetition is the death of are so keep an open:wave: mind

Not into metal? Seriously? To be blunt, the snare sounds like a combination of a ball slap sample (did you use the forum's sample? lol) and coconut shell. All of us are used to hearing something that resembles a snare, but I'd love to hear the raw file? At first I thought it was an interesting intro effect but it just carried on. Which is a shame because the drums sound well played.

There's tons of frequency masking going on, especially with the vocals which sound completely buried. I'd go back and re-eq everything, and listen and compare every instrument, and don't EQ in solo and then leave it. At the moment this is really stopping it from being polished. Which is strange because other mixes you've done were much clearer.

Perhaps give your ears a rest for the day and go back to it :-)
