Hey guys...so i had originally recorded this about a year and a half ago, when i was trying to get my vocals back into shape after taking two years off from my old band. So this was originally a mix test to see where i was then, and lets just say...i wasn't quite 100% at the time, hahaha, so i apologize if the vox are not up to my usual par! :yuk:

i actually ran across the old mix of this when i was cleaning up my hard drive, and thought, what the heck!? why not!? So, i made the mix much more of an "up to date" Idoler type of mix, and since this was recorded in a wide open studio space (a.k.a. in my bedroom) with a Shure SM57 in hand (in all of its distorted glory, hehe), i slapped some groovy polish on the vox to help them sound a bit more "good roomy," and "hopefully," a bit better overall! :loco:

anyway, i figured i would share this for fun, i already know that many of you are not gonna dig the guitar tone that i went for on this, but this was meant to be a very djenty and, overall, an experimental mix, hahaha! :dopey:

Enjoy dudes!
...and Cheers :kickass:

Didn´t like the guitar tone at all, but totally dig the vocals, man. Turn the vocals up and the guitars down. You use the SM57 handheld without any kind of pop filter?

hahaha, yea man, for this, it was straight handheld in my bedroom...so it took a lot of post pro to fix em up...but check it, i actually created a mini vocal booth for like $60, that i now use, and got some seriously great results with it! :)

it's just a whitmore collapsible box, aucoustic foam at bottom, top, left, right, back, and sm58 on a mini stand and a cheap pop filter, i'm sure you have seen them at one point, haha! cost me only $50, minus shipping, and was really easy to make...i enjoy it :loco:

(posted my "how to," here's the link below for those that "might" be interested in making one :), though i think most you guys here have a MUCh better recording setup than me, and are probably getting a good laugh, chuckle and guffah over this, hahaha)

here's a link to a different cover that i posted here a while back, one where i used the mini booth...and the tone might be a bit more...tolerable...hahaha

...anyway, as for the tone in this Pantera cover, i recorded this almost 2 years ago, and the takes were pretty crappy...like, the annoying harmonic ringing etc...so i did what i could, but the point of this was to be weird and different, ya know. really happy you dug the vocals tho man...or at least didn't turn it off before hearing them! hahaha ;)

that disaster peice cover is pretty nang, vocals sound pretty good!

what are the guitars on that?

thanks,

Oh, you´re the dude who covered Sliknot sometime ago. I loved it. I even made a mini vocal booth like yours. You have an amazing voice, I´m impressed how good you made it sound using 57 handheld. Everytime I try this is pops and booms all over the place. I know it´s 99% vocal skills, but if you ever feel like making a tutorial of how achieve such great results with these guerrilla tactics it would be awesome ; D

dcdanman- for the Slipknot cover it was my Ibanez RG1620X w/ emgX's (81 and 85) :)

hahaha, thanks man, i really don't know how to explain my vocal style, except the usual "push from your diaphragm etc..." church choir helped a lot...oh, the irony, hahaha! umm, i always use "my voice," if that makes sense, as in, i don't try to nail a certain style or someone elses vocal sound, i just do what my voice wants to do (highs, mids, lows, growls, screams, belting...those are all ways to scream of course), but what "my voice" naturally wants to do when i do those things, i let it do. :yell:

i also use a Presonus Eureka channel strip going in, and i started by just using the vocal settings they give you in the manual to start, for the Pantera cover i used those...Slipknot they were tweaked to taste. if i come up with anything else on vocal tips...i'll just pm you dude.
