New song with vocals - Gearbox - DFHS 1.0/2.0 - Slate

wow fuck those are extreme bass settings, interesting...
I fear it might lack punch without any dynamics whatsoever?

Yeah its a lot I guess, and I think I have to do it because of the limitations of plugin amps. I never ever have to do that with "real" bass tracks from a miced amp or even direct in from an amp. There's these huge dynamic spikes that I get from plugin amps in general that I can't get rid of. The parallel compressor is only taking off about 3dbs of average volume when its set at 50%, and the the L1 is basically taking off those huge spike peaks from 2 to 12dbs. That's a pretty damn big swing. Trust me, it sounds terrible if I don't limit it! It pops all over the place. A miced amp doesn't do that at all.

Yeah, crank a bass amp to get that fat growl, and you'll find that the waveform is pretty much flat/compressed. That's why tube amps are so much louder than solid state too. Major clipping going on, and that sounds fat.

Thanks Ermz! The compliment on the vox is huge as that's the goal we're trying to achieve.

For the main bass, the chain is exactly this
PODx3 for direct box > Gearbox > Curve EQ > Q10 (with narrow rips at 65hz and 110hz (specifically for the Fender)) > Voxengo Marquis compressor (in parallel mode) 50% wet/dry. Attack 0.01, release 100ms, 50:1 ratio, soft knee at 40db (max setting). Then that goes into a L1 and I drag the threshold down until the audio is limited at all times, anywhere from -2 to -12 peak gain reductions. No dynamics whatsoever.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I use a release from 50ms to 200ms on the limiter depending on the riff.

For the distorted bass, I use the same gearbox patch I use for guitars but with less gain, then highpass at 800Hz, lowpass at 3000K and limit in the same exact fashion, but not as hard. Just mix the two faders to taste and away you go.

Thanks a lot for the rundown. So do you use any gearbox patch in particular on the main bass? And you run no compression in serial... it's all in parallel? The limiter is the only grain-reduction tool you have in the bass' serial path? Do you find that limiting the bass tone to shit destroys all the clarity? I can never seem to get anything other than a low-end humming when using that much limiting.

Always interesting to read other methods... I'll have to give something similar a spin soon. Thanks!

Awesome song Splatt, the vocalist really knows what he's doing.

Do you use the PodX3 as a direct box when you are tracking the guitars aswell as you do with the bass parts? Is there a lot of latency when doing this? (I'm thinking of using my Podxt as a DI box so I can send clean signal to my DAW to use with Revalver etc.)

Love the tempo switch Matt, everything sounds bright and clear.. and it all fits perfectly.. as Stee said you have some of the best snares sounds.

Hola gentlemen. I was able to mix another song with vocals called 'Clouds at 4:00' and here's the first draft.

There's a lot of bells and whistles that are missing from this version that I'll be adding to the final mix like the keyboards and ambient guitars to give it a little more of a larger vibe, but I think you'll get the idea. The vox need to gel better in the mix and there's also some unnatural drum stuff going on too in spots that I plan to fix. How does this sound so far?

I FUCKING LOVE YOUR STUFF ARGGGH! Would really love to do some sort of collaboration sometime! lol

I didn't read all the comment's so I might miss something, but that doesn't matter 'cause this post is up to my feels to the song only. At first it didn't get me so much, but after it gathered some speed and developed it turned out to be one hell of a song! All those Manyard-ish vocs and solid production...who wouldn't like this? I loved parts after 2:43. It developed so nicely from quite calm stuff to good hell with those awesome shouts. And damn. That's effective! Drum's sound awesome and very natural. It's little bit sad that the song ended so quickly 'cause this is just one song and not "any part of album". But damn that bringed smile on my face and I enjoyed it a lot. Thank you sir!
Your songs truly sound quite professional, so don't worry about the things like that. Little bit mixing for vox to fit better in the mix and you're almost set to go imo.

...waiting for the final mix. :D

I use the Studio Tone model with the Session 4x10 cab. I also use the bass overdrive stomp, but its not adding any distortion at all, just a lot more midrange tone to the bass. About your question, the parallel compressor is doing a lot to even out the average volume of the bass, and the limiter is working overtime on those stray transients, but the limiter is also acting as a general gain reduction tool, too. I just make sure I keep the release anywhere from 50ms to 200ms to keep it nice and smooth. The slower release really helps retain clarity.

Just as a footnote: you write some kickarse music. Could only hope to be able to work with more music of that caliber.

Hey thanks a lot. That seriously means a lot, especially coming from you!

Thanks Bob! I am very glad you like it.

Thank you very much! Once I get this damn album done, I think it would be cool to experiment a bit.

Damn! Just... Damn!!!

Every time I hear one of your songs, from composition to mix, it just reminds me how much I really suck at mixing and I much more practice I need. Once again simply great in every aspect.

what tuning do you use for your guitar and bass?

I just love the part from 3:18 and onward. The vocals sound awesome to me at that point.

and The Bass and Vocals really make this song for me.

Thanks as well. The guitars and bass are both in drop B tuning for this track.

Hey Splatt, checked it out along with your other tracks,

very impressed!!! the production is top quality mate indeed!!

Do you record your Gtr tracks dry then apply Gearbox??

Im still toying with the idea of doing this but i like to track with the sound and no latency.
