New Circus Maximus album...

I really think people forgot that it's April Fools Day and bands have done this before :).

I too forgot it was April fools Day earlier, and then I noticed all kinds of band related april fools jokes all over the internet and last April Fools there was a band that did a new release news article on their website. Everyone fell for it and it was gone the next day..... So I'm not falling for it until today is completely gone, and then if the news is still out there tomorrow, I'll get excited.....

Well, CM has been talking about a new album on their Facebook for MONTHS and said on March 15th that they "got the new album back from mastering" but I don't see anywhere on the net that they've released a title so I'd love to know where this information came from.... I don't think it's an April Fool's joke that they're working on one, or even planning to release it soon, but an exact time frame and album title could be....

Very reputable website, in Spanish, but I can attest to its validity!!! Its like a MelodicRock.com but from Spain. Lots of news, previews and even interviews with JSS and the like..This news tibdit is about the latest Frontiers Records fanzine, so the info comes straight from the label...

New albums in June from Frontiers from Circus Maximus - Nine, Jorn- Bring Heavy Rock To the Land, and Richard Marx - Inside my Head!

From http://www.bravewords.com/news/181807 :

"Frontiers Records has announced the release of the third album from Norwegian progsters CIRCUS MAXIMUS, entitled Nine, on June 1st in Europe and June 5th in North America. Five years after the successful release of the concept album Isolate, this time Circus Maximus are back with a strong and mature CD.

"A lot happened in our personal lives during the past few years ", explains drummer Truls Haugen. "Three of us had kids, plus we also had a several bumps in the road with the production. So it has not exactly been a joyride, but it feels great to finally be done, and after all this time we are ready to unleash our new monster!"

Circus Maximus spent anyway their time also working hard to further refining their sound. With Nine they are poised to take their place alongside the upper echelon of progressive metal bands. The band’s musical formula is not easy to accomplish – take jaw dropping musicianship, add a singer like Michael Eriksen with a voice from heaven and toss it together with hooks, anthemic melodies and enough groove and heavy riffing that really gets into your head. For this new record the band presents the best of both worlds – offering their most melodic and at the same time heaviest moments of their repertoire, with class and maturity which is really from another world.

“The majority of the material on the new record was written by Mats Haugen and he has taken the music to a kind of simpler and more accessible approach, yet kept the progressive elements and the "nerve" that is Circus Maximus”, says Truls Haugen. “We're actually more melodic and heavier on this new record than we've ever been."

'Forging'
'Architect Of Fortune'
'Namaste'
'Game Of Life'
'Reach Within'
'I Am'
'Used'
'The One'
'Burn After Reading'
'Last Goodbye'

'Reach Within' will be released as a single worldwide on April 27th, and can be heard streaming on the Frontiers Records webradio here. A video clip for the song is in the works.

Circus Maximus will appear live in some selected shows in the summer before launching a full scale tour in support of the new album.

“We will definitely represent this album live to the whole World”, concludes Truls Haugen. “We will do more live shows and more touring than ever and we really can't wait to get back on the road!”

I can't understand the hype surrounding this band. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Isolate, but they seem to get spoken of as a top tier band by a lot of people on this board. I am not trying to piss in the thread or troll, if people like them that is totally cool. I guess I am just trying to understand what people see in them. I thought their first album was generic Dream Theater worship. I think Isolate was much better but I still would lump them in with about 20 or so other prog metal bands that are putting out good but not great, somewhat derivative music.

Like I said, I am not trying to talk anyone out of liking them, just trying to figure out what other people see in them that I am missing.

I disagree. I think The First Chapter had many differences than Dream Theater, plus that album was mega heavier than anything DT has ever done.... The opening cut "sin" I believe it's called is absolutely crushing!!!! I don't think the band has come close to another masterpiece like "Prophecy"....I do enjoy "isolate" but not as much as the first one....I'm not really even into DT that much but I loved "The First Chapter"

I would say (IMHO) what many people enjoy about them has the be the singer's particularly great voice. Eriksen has a really smooth clean tenor with a lot of control and a tonal depth that has the same quality of other singers that are usually respected for having great expressive singing voices. (Tate, Khan, etc.) The music the band writes seems to really mix with his voice in a great way. The bands musicianship is top notch like many others but they have found a melodic catchy niche that really works for them. It is very hook laden despite the obvious technical progressive wizardry they can cook up. Great Hooks and memorable melodies. I imagine they are also very respected for just how good they are live. One of those bands that just really sounds on top of things in a live setting. I think with Isolate the band wrote an album that really captured a sound and a vibe that stretched beyond the usual prog fans ears. I remember meeting a few people who had heard the song Wither and were in love with it and they didn't know a thing about Progressive Metal. They didn't even know the bands other material and how progressive the band was inclined to. There is a kind of seductive quality to some of their songs and again probably due to Michael's vocal delivery especially when he uses his lower voice that has that Tate-esque charm to it. Overall, the band writes really cool catchy epic songs and has a vocalist that is very pleasing to the ears.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! That is all.

No, seriously though, I personally LOVE how people who hate Dream Theater like to throw their name around like it's an insult. First of all, it's not - it's kinda like if you had some new, young quarterback and you told him he was JUST a Tom Brady clone. "What, you think I'm just like a guy who owns three Superbowl rings? THANKS!!!" And second of all, YES, there are common ingredients between CM and DT, but that doesn't make them the same - CM is definitely unique. It's kinda like if you didn't like Thai food and you said it all tasted exactly the same. The ONLY reason you say that is because you don't like it - ANYONE who's had red curry and green curry knows that, while they share some of the same ingredients and have a similar style, they are both very unique.

I don't think he was insulting Dream Theater. He was insulting CM (to a point) for trying to sound like them on their first album, just like a lot of Prog Metal bands start out doing IMO.

You're not entirely wrong regarding their albums, it's just that a lot of us have had a few chances to see this band live, and that definitely makes you appreciate the band more.

THIS makes me want to run out and get all of their stuff immediately. I was holding off for the new one...but you changed my mind Gran Dia! Great review!

Thanks. It seems like most people are describing them the way I describe Seventh Wonder in terms of strong vocals and catchy songs. While I do not necessarily agree (particularly with the catchy song part since I have never had one of their songs stick in my head in that Seventh Wonder, Sonata, Blind Guardian way) I am glad to have gotten people's insight on this. I will definitely check out their new album when it comes out, maybe that will be the one that clicks with me.

As I said earlier, I do enjoy their stuff, I just don't see them anywhere near the elite level that others on here do.As they say, different strokes..

I have yet to jump on the CM bandwagon and can't figure out why.....As Justin suggested, maybe I need to see them live to fully appreciate them.

Strange enough, The Magnificent was my 2011 disc of the year. :goggly:
