What would you guys recommend for a new computer. I'd prefer a PC. I would use it for personal use as well as audio. I'd like to spend no more than 1500 dollars but maybe could go a little higher. Should I get just a normal computer or get one from Pcaudio labs or some other audio production site? I already have of course a monitor, soundcard and monitor speakers.

This is what I'm buying next week, all prices are AUD on msy.com.au

Intel i7 4770K Socket 1150 $380.00
ASUS Z87 Pro $275.00
G.Skill Trident-X 16GB Kit (8Gx2) DDR3-1600 F3-1600C7D-16GTX $197.00
Samsung 128GB Sata III $145.00
Seagate 3.5" 1TB $99.00
Windows 8.1 $109
Coolermaster V8 Universal CPU Cooler RR-UV8-XBU1-GP $59.00

I have a case and PSU at home, along with monitor. Mainboard has video / sound / wireless network / USB connections.

Nice build! Although I always wondered what the point of such expansive motherboards is... :D

I know you said PC, I've been a PC guy forever, still use them daily. But I bought my first Mac for my studio. I bought the mac mini server i7, 8g of ram. This thing is a little beast, honestly it is a killer studio machine.

I have been thinking about a mac mini. This may be a dumb question but I'm assuming plug ins that you initially bought for a PC give you a mac option as well right? without buying it again? Unless of course there is no mac option to begin with. Also, do you think the mac mini is good enough for lots of VST instruments and plug ins?

Im only running protools 10, and my plugin count can insane if i want. I can bring the machine to its knees with 20 instances of amp modeling or 100 high cpu plugs but i wouldnt do that. I imagine with protools 11 being 64bit i'd never even use half of its power.

does it have enough usb ports? How about firewire or thunderbolt? The one thing I'm afraid of is I wouldnt be able to upgrade it. I'd have no idea what to do on a computer that small.

My mac mini has firewire, thunderbolt, 4 x usb. The new ones probably just have thunderbolt and usb, but i havent checked.

well thats okay if it only has thunderbolt. I can get an adapter for my saffire pro40 that allows me to plug it in via thunderbolt.
