I was very surprised by how good it sounded. "Age of the Joker" did nothing for me and I was expecting little, but this is heavy, catchy and seems like it's a little bit more serious than the goofy AOTJ album. It's not "Theater of Salvation", but on first listen it sounds like the best thing they've done since they changed styles with "Rocket Ride".

I gotta say this: guitar tone is great, bass lines are cool, and the lyrics during the verses are all really great I think. But if power metal is one of the few metal genres where the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus structure works, the chorus just doesn't draw me in that much. Where I don't need that structure is in an epic tune or a tune that ebbs, flows, and evolves. But this is a pretty straightforward power metal song with a chorus that just isn't all that great, lyrically or melodically. And compared to some of Edguy's more amazing choruses that make me love this band, yeah, it's not that great.

I think my bias on hating their most recent material seeps through too, since I want them to be so much better now than they really are, given how much I loved Hellfire Club (which is my first album by them, and was new when I bought it), and love their earlier material once I found it too. It certainly has more of a heavy metal production, which is good - the guitar tone is not that far removed from Judas Priest's Painkiller (just the tone, not the riffing), and the solo was good and economical.

This is the worst I've heard from this band - nay, I say every ham-fisted ballad they've plastered the recent albums with are definitely the worst they've ever done. But it's certainly not the best by any means. Of course, I'll give the new album a listen; but I'm still not taking them very seriously any more.

Okay, is the chorus awesome? No. But as good as Edguy is, they always have a couple of songs with only okay choruses. What strikes me here is how metal it is. And much more metal than anything on Rocket Ride, this is Hellfire Club style. If the album is a return to form it will be great indeed.

I'd rate the chances of Edguy going back to power metal and sucking as about nil. This kind of thing they can do in their sleep.

I stayed away from their last album because I was not impressed with Tinnus Sanctus... But this song would definitely get me checking out the next album.. I really miss this band and how awesome they were...

I love the chorus, I'm a sucker for that "Whoa-oh-oh" bullshit. I still wouldn't call it power metal. This is closer to the rock/metal stuff that Edguy, Brainstorm and Primal Fear have been putting out lately. Post-power metal? But still, "Vain Glory Opera" this ain't. It's close to "Hellfire Club" though, which is where the transition from power metal first started happening.

Edguy's at their best when they are straddling the line between power metal and hard rock, IMO. Hellfire Club for me was the sweet spot. The next three albums crossed way over into hard rock territory and it's just not their strength. They'll never be able to compete with bands like HEAT, Eclipse, or any Jeff Scott Soto projects in that regard.

Edguy achieved their peak with the Theater of Salvation-Mandrake-Hellfire Club trinity. In my opinion, Hellfire Club was the apex... and then things went downhill from there.

I like this song and the direction, but agree with the above assessment that Toby sounds strained. This is the worst I've ever heard him sing in studio. I hope it's just this song, but this worries me now. ..

This post pretty much echoes my thoughts as well. Although with that said, I feel like his recent Avantasia material (2008-present) has been incredibly strong.

Listening to "The Mystery of Time", there were definitely hints that his voice was strained, and, as I'm sure many of you know, he was quite sick at the North American Avantasia show. I think he would really benefit from taking some time off. He's put out 17 albums in the last 20 years, not including the re-recording of The Savage Poetry. Combine that with plenty of touring and 3-hour Avantasia shows, and his voice has got to be worn out.

I am growing to like this song more each time I listen to it, and I'll end up liking the album, but Tobi needs to slow down a bit.

Yep. He's becoming quite Falaschi like.
