Hey everyone i have heard a lot of great things about this forum and i am a total noob when it come's to recording. I am basically starting from nothing. And if any of you guy's could give me some pointer's and also some thread's to check out to help get me started that would be very much appreciated! Thanks guys

Tip 1: Acoustic Drums... if you have to use samples... do so sparingly...

Tip 2: Real amps...

Tip 3: Don't mention pirated software...

Tip 4: Don't mention PC vs Macs...

Tip 5: Enjoy your stay

Thanks dude and no i don't want to pirate anything. I want to do this as legit as i can

Those are true but.. as a newcomer you don't usually have access to a fully micced acoustic drumset and a 5150.

Reaper is a pretty epic DAW, check it out.

only the cool gang uses pro tools

Yeah i have a few amp's already i have a dual recto and a 5150 and a recto cab. But i am just now putting together a recording computer and looking into everything i would need. I am mostly doing it so i can record my own stuff. But i want to work my way up to making what i record sound great. So i am really just looking for some starting point's onto how to even setup everything and get going.

Set up as in Getting everything to work after i get it. I have done research and know what monitors and interface i want to get and acoustic treatment. I just need help and guidance more or less with getting my DAW installed and everything working properly.

The best thing for you to do right now is make a list of:

A- The stuff you already have

B- The kind of recording you want to do. full band? multi-mic'd drums? Mic'd amps? etc...

C- The stuff you're currently planning to get, but haven't got yet.

That'll give us a good starting point.

In the meantime, go through all the sub-forums and read the sticky posts, there is a lot of seriously awesome information stickied on this forum.
That should keep you busy for a while :)

If you are new to recording, and looking to buy recording gear, look into (at least) a two channel audio interface with mic preamps, and 1 or 2 shure sm57's. This will allow you to start micing up and recording your guitar amps, and a few other things like vocals. you can record bass guitar direct with the preamps. If you want to start recording acoustic drums you will need a lot more mic inputs and mics. You can probably get away with some programed drum samples just to make some rough demos/ideas.

Don't count on anything sounding better than shitty demos when you start out. Getting a good sounding recoding takes a while to develop your skills, so be patient and open minded, and NEVER act like you know everything there is to know. The producers that talk about how good they are almost always the ones that don't have mixes to back it up, while the good ones let their productions speak for themselves.

Haha yeah I don't plan on being good anytime soon. But yes I want to do full production on my band. I have a 002r and plan on getting a d8 so i can Mic up a full kit.

If they are painted green, that is.
Choose carefully which side you're in!

Welcome dude!

By the way, if you've got your guitar rig ready, a 002r and a computer, you're pretty much good to go, or at least you've got what costs the more money to start with, which is a good thing, lol

Well i decided to buy reaper and also buy cubase 5 from the local music store in my town. After i install the daw's how would i go about getting my 002r to be recognized in reaper or cubase as a recording device?

install the drivers. On cubase i goto Devices> Device Setup> VST Audio System and i select my interface. Then i goto Devices> VST connections> Input> i select my recording interface.

Recommended vst instruments/plugins:

Drums
-Superior Drummer
-steven slate drums/samples
-aptrigga/drumagog/slate trigger (i use aptrigga)

http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy-sneap/529782-sharing-my-collection-drum-samples-here.html

EQ
-Waves req bands
-waves q10
-waves ssl channel 4000
-voxengo glisseq
(you DONT need those i just prefer them)

Compressor
-Waves rcomp
-Waves c1comp
-Softtube FET 1176 comp
(just preference)

Guitars (although recording with a mic and cab is the best way to do it if you choose to use guitar amp sim i recommened)
-TSS/TSE808
-Nickcrow 8505 7170
-poulin amp sims
-TSEx30
-lecab2 to load cab impulses
(these plugins are free)

Mastering
-Slate digital fg-x
-izotope ozone
-voxengo elephant
-voxengo SPAN
(just a few plugins)

I dont have much insight on vocals/bass i just pitch shift my guitar til i can buy a cheap bass.

I bought a waves bundle pack a while ago thats why i constantly use wave plugins but you dont NEED to use them.

*edit* oh and waves c4 and use andy sneap multiband settings for guitar.
