I'm buying a new mac...
I haven't decided yet if it's gonna be an 8core or a 4core+27" screen?

the pro of the 4 core is that I'd have enough money left for a new screen, the con is that I'm still shelling out a lot of money for a potentially "close to being outdated" system...and I'm not planning on buying a new mac again in the next years tbh...

so what would you do, new 8core or new 4core plus screen? (I'm using 2x 20" cinema displays now"

New ones apparently due in august, so hold your horses if you can.... but 8 for sure.

Just placed my order:

Apple Mac Pro 2,4GHz Intel 8-Core Xeon, 8GB Kingston, 1TB, SD
LG DVD+/-RW schwarz + 22x8x16x -22x6x16x RAM12x SecurDisc SATA
CANCOM Care 36 (Bring-in)
Apple Time Capsule, 1TB

my knees are still shaking

Right.. I was going to say to wait, because I'm pretty sure that Mac Pro is quite old now? The 8-core Xeon is significantly worse than a Sandy Bridge i5 quad-core, it just sounds more impressive.

Yes 8 or 6. The Sixcore is faster in some applications and in others the 8core wins.. But 8 is cheaper and you have double As much RAM slots so it's a Lot cheaper to upgrade it.

I bought the Quad and it's ridiculously fast but The Six any Eightcores are 2times as fast since Logic can properly use that much cores :,( Hope I don't run out of processing power in the next 3-4 years.

well, although that might be true it's not really an option for me, since the 8core is already more expensive than I can afford really...
so even though the i5 might be "better", it'll not be cheaper than the westham8core.

this Mac has to last for 10 years now (which is actually possible, I've been using my old 2GHz Dual for 6 Years).
upgrades will be more high class conversion and outboard, so that'll relieve the CPUs a bit further.

please tell me I'll be fine with the 8-Core, it's 3600€ after all, lol

My internet is being retarded at the moment so I can't confirm how much the 8-cores actually are, but I'm getting anything between $600 and $2000, while the i5 Sandy Bridge is only about $250au.. Intel kinda fucked up and made the 'low-mid end' cards as good as the absolute top-end ($1k) cards. Take advantage of that.
I'm running it in my PC atm, the entire rig including SSD and a good GFX card for gaming was about $1500 if you include the price of parts I already own... this PC has pretty much THE best specs you can get without spending many thousands. A Mac would be more expensive.. how much more I don't know.

Personally I think the Mac you ordered will last like forever. Especially with PT HD.

And Morgan is kinda right imho, the Sandy Bridge CPUs just smoke the Intel Xeon series. The MacBook Pros with 4x2,2 Ghz are faster (a lot faster) than my 2,8 Quad (also from 2010). So the new Mac Pros will probably be like 2 times as fast even in the lowest configuration. The article says they'll probably come out in august. Might even be cheaper (allthough I doubt that).

well, that's all good (or bad actually), but the new macs will most likely not be cheaper than the old ones, so I wouldn't have been able to afford it anyways

Dude, they won't be more expensive. You know, Apple maintains price range almost the same in every new generation. At worst, there'll be like 100-200 euro difference in the price but minimum %50 in the performance. I would wait if it's not a matter of life and death. It's just less than 2 months.

In the other hand, you can live with the current configuration for like 6-7 years. Have fun with your new toy.

that is so fucked up again.
I NEED a new mac now (cause my old one died).
seems like with all my "must" purchases I'm hitting the worst possible timing :(

Don't worry, new Macs will always be in the horizon. If you absolutely want the new model when they come out, you can get a good price of the machine you ordered and get the new one with a couple of hundred difference.

Haha yes it always is. I HATE buying computers.
When I bought mine, the new 2010 Mac Pro was only 2 weeks old or something.
So I thought it was perfect timing. I bought the 4core machine because Logic couldn't adress more than four cores and 12 cores were exactly as fast as the good ol' quadcore Mac Pros. So I bought it, and a few days after I got it (!), Logic was updated and the 12cores were 10000 times faster
Then I only used the Mac Pro from time to time because I built my studio.I could have easily waited until now :Smug:

Still you gotta see the facts: It's superfast and won't run out of power because of PT HD3 anyway. If someday everything's 64bit you can still upgrade the RAM to 32 GBs and buy 4 SSD drives when they're cheap enough.

On the other hand, now you can still cancel the order without much hassle..
Perhaps you could call Cancom and ask them if you can send back the Mac you ordered within 30 days? Should be possible (not sure because it's BTO, though). If you tell them you need a replacement now and will buy the new Mac Pro from them, perhaps you can even "rent" a Mac for the coming month or so?

might be the logic board or the CPU
I've just cancelled my order btw, gonna get a new one in august and try to bridge the time with a used mac that I'm trying to hunt down now

thanks for the hints
