So it is now available for purchase. You can spec out the 12 core model if you want. The UK site appears to offer 0% financing now too, which is new since I last checked http://store.apple.com/uk/buy-mac/mac-pro

EDIT - Just realised the title makes it look like I'm going to buy one myself. Currently I'm planning to buy a mini soon, but would consider using the 0% finance to give some financial agility versus clearing it in full in January - what I do with my own finances isn't what I'm intending to discuss here though haha.

Hi Max :)

Yeah .... these look a bit insane. To be honest though, I've nowhere near rinsed my two year old i7 setup. Literally never have CPU issues.

Hello!

I've got an iMac that I think is somewhere between 6 and 7 years old now. 2.4ghz Core2Duo and maxed out at 4gb Ram. I think people are pointing and laughing at me dude.

Yeah I think they are too.

Those Mac Mini's are pretty cool though. I have one at work, and am upgrading it with an SSD next year. It's only a core 2 duo as well, but with an SSD it'll have another year or two left in it I reckon. I don't use it for recording or anything, just bog standard work stuff.

Honestly, unless you're working with orchestral VSTis etc, you really don't need a very powerful computer for audio work anymore.

I dunno, I have a moderately powered i5 laptop and I can easily make it sound like a fat bloke running up a hill with a 40 track session and the right plugins - not vsti. I've had less trouble choking up quad cores but I'd imagine there are plenty people running much bigger sessions than I can that have.

I think you'll do fine with the Mac Mini. I've only had problems with memory running out, but that's only because I use a huge amount of virtual instruments.

Speaking of which, if you aren't in a rush; judging by its product cycle, there should be a new Mac Mini model coming out soon.

Disagreed. I have a 3.5-year old i7 Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM, and I have CPU issues with every mix these days. Of course, I wouldn't if I stopped using Slate VTM haha

Regardless, I think the new Mac Pro is pretty expensive.
