New macbooks next tuesday

I don't even know why they would ditch it, surely it's become so standardized that omitting it wouldn't save any significant amount of money?

As I said, it's the obsession with simplification. Apple feels (wrongly) that USB 2.0 has replaced Firewire 400. Apple led the way with eliminating floppy drives in 1998 - that was a great decision. This latest decision though, is retarded.

Just a curiosity..... 1 year ago Apple change the FW chip on their iMac, MB and MBP from Texas Instruments to Agere and lot of people didn't use anymore their audio interface.
The “new” version is Agere (formerly Lucent). These chipsets are completely incompatible with all firewire audio/MIDI interfaces — they’ll see drives, cameras, etc., but not audio/MIDI. In fact, because of this chipset, RME (a major manufacturer of high-end interfaces) has de-listed the Leopard OS as being compatible.
Apparently the problem is the FW400 port.
One solution is to buy and connect an external fw disk to the fw800 port and daisy-chains the audio interface using the fw400 port of the disk.......it seems to work.

So.........it's only a casuality that Apple eliminates fw port from new Mac books and eliminates the 400 port from the Pros? mmmmmmmmmmmmmh

I was planning to get the new ones when I move out in July, seems unlikely now after the bad press. It's a toss up between a PC or an Imac now. I want something to record demos on and run logic (or cubase if it's a pc), nothing too advanced, something I can connect an external sound card (emu 1616 maybe) and to surf the internet, and store music.. which would you reccomend? The thing I don't have much mac experience, been using PC's since whenever.
