New project from Vanden Plas vocalist Andy Kuntz

You're going to hate me Bryant. A few months ago VP played in a venue very close from here but I stayed home :D

Naaaaaah drop that gun Bryant, I'm going to see them in September ;) Now that I have finally heard Christ 0, my interest in the band has risen up again...

I was peeking at this earlier in the week and it certainly looks promising for me. I loved Orphaned Land's album, Mabool, with all it's Middle Eastern hooks and melodies. I just wish Andy could see through his ego-clouded mind and realize there are better, more diverse singers out there who could take his music to the next level. I'll give Andy full credit as a songwriter, I've liked or loved everything he's been involved with musically. And although he's improving as a vocalist, he is still hampered by limited range and style.

Still, I expect I'll be picking this album up the moment it comes out. It's right up my alley: heavy, bombastic, symphonic, progressive. :headbang:

Ha ha ha.... I only posted about 100 posts about VP because they kicked my ass so much, not that was trying to force them on people who already knew them. If people didn't know who they were, that was different. I wanted to be sure they were exposed to them. I certainly don't expect everyone to like them just because I do. Now if you don't go see them, I am going to shoot you. :heh: :yuk: They are good live. I honestly also think my favorite song of all-time is "Silently." That is everything you could ask for in a metal song.

Interesting indeed. What would be more interesting to me is a U.S. tour for VP!

I wish, but I doubt it will happen. We have to hope for a festival appearance. They aren't selling enough in the US for a profitable tour. Brainstorm made them an offer to tour together in the US, but they turned it down. Despite the totally different style, I think that would have been a pretty bad-ass combination.

I've heard this complaint before. I respect your opinion (seriously!:headbang: ) But I just don't get it! I find him a fantastic singer!!! Really, top notch. Maybe the earlier stuff is spotty or something (I've not heard it all), but The God Thing, Beyond Daylight, Christ O.....all fantastic vocal performances in my book. Even a cut above I'd say.

In particular I find Beyond Daylight and Christ O just plain classic modern metal albums. Top notch stuff. The writing is strong. The riffs are killer. The arrangements are great. And, for me, the vocals are fantastic.

I actually agree with Bryant that the new one deserves to stand amongst the best metal albums of all time. I'm not sure where on the list (probably lower for me than Bryant), but I really do like it that much!!!!!

Holy Shit!!!! That would have been an excellent tour.:headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
It's a damn shame it didn't come through.

Well, Wiz, I like about 60-70% of his singing, he's just got a few vocal tendencies that rub me the wrong way. I recently turned my best friend here in Montana onto ChristO, and he also loves Andy's voice. It really just comes down to taste, I guess! I stand strong behind my opinion that a more diverse singer like Jorn Lande (not Jorn himself though, that would be EGO CLASH) would be better suited for Andy's very special style of songwriting. But I also realize that's probably not going to happen and I really should...

...JUST GET OVER IT! :)

Haha. No, you're right though, it's just about personal taste! There's a lot of stuff I can't stand that others find amazing. So it goes!

To get back on the original subject.... I want to hear Andy sing this stuff based on the book of Exodus. Judging by his prior work, he seems like a religious or at least a spiritual man. He put a great deal of passion in the "Gethsemane" bonus track. It has probably been 25 years since I have read Exodus (or any part of the bible for that matter) but I know it has Moses, Burning Bush, Ten Commandments, plagues, passover, Red Sea etc. There is a buttload of stuff that happens in the book of Exodus. It would make for a good topic and it being part of the bible, most metal bands wouldn't touch it, though Metallica did with "Creeping death."

PS... you SUCK TSO !!! J/k

There's a few things about his vox that rub me the wrong way too so I get where you're coming from. It doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does you though. My ears are different than yours, etc., etc...

I cannot stand much of Jorn's stuff. I don't know what it is about him that I can't stand because I can't listen to him long enough to pinpoint what it might be. His latest, The Duke, I like but it is far simpler and more straightforward than most of his other stuff. Maybe that's it or maybe he's too diverse for me. My ears are different than yours, etc. etc...

Dude! The entire Old Testament is totally metal. There's all kinds of stuff in there that would make for good metal concept albums. I mean, geeze, it's all about an eye for an eye! :)

Different strokes for different folks, Wheez! The thing I like about Jorn is his diversity. He can sound like 3 or 4 completely different singers depending on which style and tone he uses. Of course, I have an addiction to concept albums that feature many different singers like on Ayreon and Missa Mercuria. :headbang:

Wheezer is right about the Old Testament being tailor made for Heavy Metal. I've been reading it start to finish over the past few months and it's amazing how much backstabbing and murdering is going on. Even God gets in on the act and starts killing people (sometimes just their children) because they didn't obey his commands. It's all very brutal, very Shakespearian.

Jorn ticks me off stylistically, not vocally. He could be a metal God if he could write metal tunes. The pipes are a given. he has a great voice. He needs to either sing classic rock or sing metal. He flip-flops into this nowhereland between rock and metal, but not in a good way. I do like "The Duke" but to be honest, I think Lofstat has a lot to do with why I like it. I think his bombastic tone forces lande to sing a little more "metallic." No offense to Ostby and Malmsteen, but Lofstat is also probably the best guitarist Jorn has worked with in his career as well. If he keeps Lofstat around for his solo stuff, he could really get a good thing going.

So far I think Andy's best vocal performance can be found on his Abydos project, he really put all his heart into this one.

Put the crack pipe down Flo. This thread is about Jorn Lande.

Andy absolutely rips on "Christ 0" though. I am glad I have been able to give people the "Vanden Plas on the brain" disease.

OUCH! I believe I've just been stung! For hijacking.

Say Bryant, the ChristO cd keeps getting stuck in my cd player and I have to listen to it over and over. You're not sending any hoodoo curses my way are you?

Funny story though. A couple nights ago, my buddy and I were setting up our campsite for this weekend and we were jamming on the new Vanden Plas. Next thing we knew, our campsite was being overrun with deer. Five of them came drifting in and would calmly walk within 20 feet of us. We suspected they were trying to get closer to the speakers on the truck. Apparently deer don't have a problem with Andy's vocals either.

I'm leaving in a little while to spend the weekend up there. I plan on playing VP again this evening to see if the phenomenon repeats itself.

Vanden Plas needs very little voodoo from me. My "voodoo" is simply an introduction. The quality takes over after that.....
