NEW SAMPLES AT evergrey.net mainpage comments ?

Definitely more commercial than I'd want, but the riffs don't sound like overt MTV fodder to me, and it still has the Evergrey trademark on it. I'll get MMA, but I may have to hear it first...

I'm definitely thinking along these lines, though the riffs feel pretty stale to me. I'm still kinda lost with the people praising Jonas' drumming... these three clips don't show anything at all special that he didn't pull of in TIC (which he sounds fuckin' excellent on IMO). This is pretty straight foward stuff.

I'm cautious and slightly dissapointed... these didn't hit me right out of the gate like Touch of Blessing or Blinded. The riffs lack flare and the chunky 7-string tone doesn't sound as crisp as their tone on previous releases. Tom also sounds more restrained for some reason... It all has the Evergrey vibe to it no doubt... just much more tame.

But I digress... these are just clips :). I'm sure I'll end up picking up the album.

well I'm a a little disappointed, the riffs (the ones we can hear so far) are a little too generic for me. I'll of course get the album and I'll probalby end up liking it more than I should because its Evergrey....but these samples are leaving me a little underwhelmed at the moment. Not that they're bad at all...but I know Evergrey is capable of much more.

Hmm...nothing grabs me about the clips, but clips usually suck in the material selected and in the soud quality. Evergrey seems to be about the intros and outtros and the different passages in songs, which has been dwindling since TIC was released.

I will continue to expect a commercial offering as they are poising to make a jump to a larger label.

Is it just me or do I see Patrick Carlsson in the Monday Morning Apocalypse single cover? Right above the hand...?

I've heard the clips and I must admit, I am undecided, as it is difficult to tell on a short clip. I'm sure I will love the new album when I hear it fully, so I will reserve judgement until then

im not too sure about the clips, will definetly need to hear the full album to make my judgement. all i would say about the samples is that they don't sound as dark as older evergrey stuff

Yea, I agree. Less dark, just heavy. I see influences from everywhere though.

I cant say I dont like it though. I feel as though im easy to please when it comes to music. Usually music is hit or miss with me, as an album will either hit me deep, or just sound good. So I cannot judge yet. So far, I like the heaviness, but I do see the commercial approach on these clips. the happy chorusy parts are definitely not what Evergrey is all about. But for some reason, I have a good feeling about this album. I loved The Inner Circle, and this sounds similar. I have faith in a good album, but it will be too commercial for some of the fans. Other fans with a broader range of musical taste will be satisfied though. It seems as though any new album a band releases seems too commercial or is progressing in a bad way to certain fans. There will be dissapointed fans, and some impressed fans. But their are cases when a cd just sucks.

Nothing to cream over, we'll see when the album comes out but there better be the original solos that I need to complete my evergrey experience. I hate still in the water sounds like disturbed

Not that my opinion matters, but i think it's a refreshing sound from Evergrey. Personally i like the direction they seem to be taking, the samples have very good melodies and solid arrangement. If I wanna hear Solitude/ISOT over and over again, I can always listen to them. I want something different this time, and looks like i'll be getting it. Can't wait to hear the whole album.
Good job guys!

Well I've listened to the samples several times since my first post and they have grown on me. That combined with Glenn's (Harvester) review has me anticipating the album more. Of course like Glenn, I am a bit of an Evergrey fanboy, so I'm certainly not unbiased. Just wish I could have gotten one of those first 100 signed copies!

though I was expecting a stylistic change considering all the information that's been released so far... it still is slightly strange to hear this sound from Evergrey...

however... like most Evergrey material... I feel this has the potential to "grow" on me...

The production is certainly quite "up-front" and "overpowering"...

the material seems to be more "groove-oriented"... very thick... very rich... and just from these brief samples... it seems that there are some strong vocal hooks... Evergrey has always had a special talent of combined complicated songs with unforgettable hooks...

I'm not crazy about the cover art or theme of the website either. This looks more like the cover a band would use for a live album or something.

I'm pumped to hear the full album. Judging from the review, this album should have more than just what the samples represent. "Still In the Water" doesn't really do much for me as of now, but the other two samples, especially "Unspeakable" caught my ear. Sure, the title track doesn't sound like it is going to be as heavy as past installments, but I am definitely hearing a little bit of the past albums in this one. It seems like it may be more vocal and melodic, which isn't always a bad thing, considering that Tom can convey a great range of emotions with his voice. Probably not as progressive, but still Evergrey, and that's all that matters. I guess it just all comes down to whether or not you like Evergrey from a musical, lyrical, emotional, or "popularity" standpoint.

Well, this album is going to SOUND awesome... I'm not telling anything about compositions because I have to hear them whole first.

Hmm.

I'm confused. These clips sound like they are trying to commercialize the Evergrey sound, but still "stay grey". It feels kind of disjointed. The singing style (which is getting ever more and more commercial) doesn't feel like it matches the heaviness of the riffs.

Some of the riffs show the old Evergrey that we all love, but at some points I am half expecting Tom to bust a mad phat rhyme, yo.

Have to wait until an entire song is posted to make a proper judgment though. These are just initial feelings on the clips.
