Confused as how to make my snare meaner now though, I want to give it more of a "thwack" sound

Having a bit of trouble! You using logic? I've placed it in the VST folder (library >audio > plugins> vst but still not appearing! Rescanned my plugs a few times

fast attack doesn't make sense, that would mean that the compressor is clamping down on the initial attack of the transient completely eliminating the thwack that you're looking for. Slow attack, medium release.

try an EQ on the guitar buss with a -2 to -3db @1k with a Q of 1.5

that'll reduce the nasal sound out of them

I use the Logic compressor 99% of the time. Gets the job done and sounds sweet to me
