I have a new song for you guys to practice mixing. First off i will give you some info about it.

This song was originally written by Logan91 on the UG forums. He wrote the whole thing in guitar pro, and when i listened to it, i liked it so much i decided to record it. Its not the tightest thing i have ever recorded (keep in mind i recorded bass, guitar and vocals!), and the song itself is really hard to play IMO. Guitars were tracked with a Epiphone Explorer-EMG 81/85

Bass is a Yamaha RBX375 with stock pups, there is also a second track which was split by my DI box into my pod.

Drum velocitys have not been edited so feel free to if you would like

Vocals were recorded by me with a Shure Beta58a in my untreated apartment.

Guitar and bass were both done through my countryman type 85 DI box.

I don't understand all these "hey here's a fun thing to mix for the fuck of it" posts with MIDI drums and NO MAP OR ANYTHING. I cannot figure out what the fuck is supposed to be what, not everyone uses the same drum VSTi's and I just tried opening the MIDI in GP5 and I get bongo hits now and then - wtf. I really like all these things that get posted but they end up being useless because I can't get the drums going.

roflsaurusrex - I have a problem with the drums, in my case tempo 180 isn't correct, drums playing well for some period of time, but most ot the time is incorrect to the riffs, someone has a similar problem? :(
 
hey man, you should just post the gp file for the drums so everyone can use their preferred VST and see what is intended to be played

I had to change maybe 2 things when i mixed it cause they werent lined up right with superior. Let me know if you have any other problems

Widek, just gonna tell your youtube channel is amazing :D

Look at the GP file i just posted, the tempo is 180 throughout the whole song, but when the first piano comes in, it changes to 150 for a few bars. I believe thats your problem. Let me know if that is it

Let me know if that is it. I have the tempo changes embedded in the drum midi that i have included, im not sure why it didnt work for you

overall really nice, thanks! but look out with the saturation, this is seriously clipped...also, the vocals have a little too much reverb, which I don't think work for death metal, it makes it sound like black metal. Listen to the band Whitechapel, it sounds like he sings straight to the microphone, too much reverb make the low end disappear if you get me.
Still I'm noone to speak about mixing, I kinda suck at it :D , so a million thanks anyway

It probably sucks a big one, but advice from anybody would be much appreciated. There seems to be a lot of clipping near the end of the song when it's just piano and guitar. The piano's very low in the mix but the master's still clipping. Any help with that?

Also, this is a great song with great vocals. :D

well, you say it's just piano and guitar but that part is the one with most instruments in the whole song haha...it's guitars, bass, piano and the ambient pad...I think the pad is what's making it clip, check that.

One thing I noticed is that the bass drum is almost gone :OMG:
Vocals were mixed really great...that was my favorite thing in this mix, guitars sound great too...so you could just fix that bass drum and piano problems :wave:

I'll mess around with the kick, and yeah the pad was definitely causing the clipping, haha.

EDIT: Link's updated. Added moar kick, and there's no clipping in the outro.

thanks for all the replys guys. These mixes are sounding great so far. Its nice to be able to mix something thats not the standard chug chug with no outside instruments. I hope to see more replys and more mixes soon!

drums are great, cymbals in this demo are out of sync but they seem like really nice samples...guitar tone was good too...let's see how you deal with the vocals haha imo it's the hardest thing to make fit

definitely better, vocals sound awesome...I would lower them maybe 1db, in this genre the guitars and drums have more "priority"...still it's great just as it is ;) I liked what you did with the outro btw

my face has been melted dude :yow:...drums sound "br00tal", I liked the toms especially, you have to tell me which VST you used man :D, nice guitar tone and vocals too

and a question, does anyone know what effect does Randy Blythe from Lamb of God uses on recordings?, like this...


it would be nice if someone told me so I can hear how it sounds on my song :), it's like a really nice echo mixed with reverb but really subtle...and still keeps the volume and lower frequencies :confused:
