New THYRFING

"Valdr Galga" is all fun and cheese and drakkars in the dying sun. The subsequent albums failed to catch me as much, but if you tell me the new one follows Moonsorrow's 2005 path, I'll drool and check.

It doesn't. It's more METAL but not necessarily with stronger songs than Vansinnesvisor. No more jollyfolk, at least

Urkraft was arguably more jollyfolk than Valdr Galga and Vansinnesvisor had small traces of it here and there

No way! (about Urkraft) They nearly buried the up-front, in-your-face keys on Urkraft and went back to making the riffs and folkish melodies were the basis for every song, a la the s/t debut.

Well, I listened to this album today finally and I'm not blown away -- still, it's only one listen in so it's an early observation.

I like the song "Höst" and the two that follow, but again, nothing that blows me away like "Mjollner" or "Mimers Well" etc. What the heck?

Urkraft / Valdr Galga era >> Vaginavisor / Fartonstrider era

I'm not digging this fuzzy guitar sound either, what on earth kind of production is that? Give me glorious majestic sweeping viking landscapes! Give me the new Moonsorrow!! Otherwise I'll take the darkened razor sharp attack of the new Naglfar!

Will listen to this again tonight.

Bass solo, take 2.

If so, Thyrfing is just not for you anymore, sorry

Well, I'm not sure if Thyrfing ever filled that slot tbh, but yeah, I prefer the epic side of things. Conversely, when Thyrfing succeed, it's on albums like Urkraft and Valdr Galga.

OK guys, so best Thyring album/era aside...seriously, tell me what's going on with the new album. What are it's strong points, or are there specific songs/sections I should listen out for? Give me some details here if you're suggesting it's a great, solid album because I wanna know! It'll be good to get some feedback before listening to this on the second go round.

Oh, I don't know, I'm just causing trouble this morning.

I've really only heard the 1st half of the album, and I loved every song I heard. Jason's heard the whole thing several times now.

And it so totally ROCKS!!! That's cool if you don't like it Ali, maybe it will click for you down the road, and maybe it won't. We'll see.

Hmm. All I'm saying is that I prefer Urkraft or Valdr Galga. If you think otherwise, share the story! Are there standout songs? Is there something specific about the atmosphere of the album? etc etc.

I'm just looking for more than "it rocks".
