New THYRFING

Actually so far I don't think it's got anything on Vansinnesvisor.

I've never understood your devout love for that album. Of course I enjoy it, I love all things Thyrfing, but it really is my least favorite. Of the 1/2 of the new one I've heard thus far, I already enjoy it more than Vans.

I just think it's fuckin excellent. It seems more honest than the whole set sail to plunder with viking rage while drinking mead thing. Also the lyrics I love love love, especially "Ångestens Högborg" and "Världsspegeln" (which happens to be my favourite Thyrfing track, also "Draugs Harg" and "From Wilderness Came Death")... You non Swedes are missing out :tickled:

That's cool, I can understand that; one negative about listening to music sung in a native language. And I would agree about the maturity (which is essentially what you're saying) of Vans. Valdr was slightly TOO jollyfolk - (TM) & (C) 2005 Erik, Inc. - for me, and you already know I think Urkraft is perfect. To me, what I've heard of the new one is like the best elements of Urkraft (those layered guitars and yes, catchy headbanging shitz) + Vans. put together.

listened to it a bunch o' times now and........

jollyfolk plunder the village thyrfing>>>>>>>semi-serious progressive viking thyrfing

You know, I listened to Valdr Galga again and it is only the first song which drowns in the keyboards....the rest is pretty guitar oriented. Not sure if they recorded that one song separately?

Then again, some people like keyboard metal. See: early Nok Mort and Dan Swano's Moontower.

The last 3 songs on Valdr Galga are like their holy trinity for me. :kickass:

new manegarm>>>>>>new thyrfing

some bands, like thyrfing, should just stick to what they're good at. in this case, jollyfolk

I've listened to both the new Manegarm and Thyrfing closely in the last couple of days.

Regarding Manegarm:

1 - Harsh male vocals: CHECK
2 - Clean male vocals / drunken chanting: CHECK
3 - Clean female vocals: CHECK
4 - Viola solos a la Skyclad: CHECK
5 - Viking/Nordic melodies / harmonies: CHECK
6 - MOST IMPORTANTLY, good songwriting: CHECK

Without doubt a top 10 contender. Where Moonsorrow takes the crown for pure EPIC viking metal, Manegarm surely deserve the "to the point" viking metal award.

Again, the songwriting is the standout feature of the album. There's some depth to it, and they're not afraid to employ melody. Why do so many bands forget about the "tune" aspect to the songwriting?

Regarding Thyrfing:

All I'll say is this -- it sounds like they've DUMBED down their sound quite a bit. The riffing is basic, in that it might work better live than in the studio. In fact, I'm sure it will and I look forward to it. The problem, however, is that the songs tend to be BORING!

Another tid bit - the 2nd half of the Thyrfing album is *significantly* better than the first half, with "Host" being the turning point.

I get the feeling that Thyrfing are bringing in that punk/black metal element into their sound (all the while maintaining that darker edge) and the issue with this is that there are other bands doing it better: modern Darkthrone and certainly Vried.

In summary, Thyrfing desperately need to get back to the Valdr Galga / Urkraft sound because nobody does it better. [/carly simon]

The End. Thank you for your time.

Thanks for digging out Manegarm by the way, that was a great find. 2 listens in and it's one of my fave releases from '05 already.

Re: Thyrfing, considering the band and what they're capable of, it's a 7.5/10. With time I might grow to appreciate it more, who knows (ESPECIALLY after seeing them play some of the material live).

I would agree with that as well; given my fanboy nature, I have it at about 8/10, so that makes sense.

Ali, I think you'd LOVE Thronar too. Do a quick search, it can't be any further back than the 2nd page or so. I uploaded a track for D/L as well. It's Ensiferum meets Urkraft-era Thyrfing. :Spin:

this thread made me bust out with the manegarm. i really should have checked these guys out sooner.

i'm not too crazy about the first two albums (at least right now), but Dodsfard and Vredens TId are what i like, and lots of it. cool artwork too

give the violin player some pints on me. wow
