I've listened to both the new Manegarm and Thyrfing closely in the last couple of days.
Regarding Manegarm:
1 - Harsh male vocals: CHECK
2 - Clean male vocals / drunken chanting: CHECK
3 - Clean female vocals: CHECK
4 - Viola solos a la Skyclad: CHECK
5 - Viking/Nordic melodies / harmonies: CHECK
6 - MOST IMPORTANTLY, good songwriting: CHECK
Without doubt a top 10 contender. Where Moonsorrow takes the crown for pure EPIC viking metal, Manegarm surely deserve the "to the point" viking metal award.
Again, the songwriting is the standout feature of the album. There's some depth to it, and they're not afraid to employ melody. Why do so many bands forget about the "tune" aspect to the songwriting?
Regarding Thyrfing:
All I'll say is this -- it sounds like they've DUMBED down their sound quite a bit. The riffing is basic, in that it might work better live than in the studio. In fact, I'm sure it will and I look forward to it. The problem, however, is that the songs tend to be BORING!
Another tid bit - the 2nd half of the Thyrfing album is *significantly* better than the first half, with "Host" being the turning point.
I get the feeling that Thyrfing are bringing in that punk/black metal element into their sound (all the while maintaining that darker edge) and the issue with this is that there are other bands doing it better: modern Darkthrone and certainly Vried.
In summary, Thyrfing desperately need to get back to the Valdr Galga / Urkraft sound because nobody does it better. [/carly simon]
The End. Thank you for your time.
