New to Opeth

Hello, I just wanted everyone' opinion on which Opeth albums to buy first. I plan on buying 2, and haven't listened to them at all before. If they are as good as everyone says, I think I'll really be loving picking up each album after the first 2 I buy.

So which 2 would you recommend that I buy? I'm thinking probably 2 from their middle releases so I can work my way down to the oldest, and up to the most recent.

Your suggestions? Thanks, as you'll be helping my Opeth experience be all that it should be. I've been waiting to check them out for ages now, and NOW is the time!

Ya Blackwater park was the easiest for me to get into. Morningrise is awesome as well. Still life took me a little while to get into , but now I love it to death. But try blackwater park and I'm sure you will love my arms your hearse. Anyways later. Good hunting to ya.

Still Life and Morningrise. Without a doubt, IMO, the two that contain all ends of Opeth's greatness.

Get Morningrise and MAYH.

They will give you an idea of the early opeth, and the later opeth with the line up changes.

But it doesn't matter which album you buy, because EVERY SINGLE ALBUM IS AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPEICE!!!

well, seriously, all their albums are EXTREMELY awesome =)

If you are a patient person, get My Arms Your Hearse, at that one will take time to understand.

If you want instant gratification, get BlackWater Park...it is the easist of all their cds to get into...

All of their cds are great.

Close your eyes and take a pick - doesn't matter. Everybody has a different opinion of Opeth, and how they grew into it, and which song/album is their favorite.

Every album is great in its own right, so without knowing what you're looking for, you can do no wrong by choosing any of their albums.

What I would do is download a few random songs from each and then get whichever album has your favorite of those. Good way to choose. Any one will do, but their first and last releases are reasonably different.

I dare you to download Black Rose Immortal and NOT buy Morningrise...

MAYH is just about as good as an album can get in my opinion. I would certainly make that one of the two. But again, you can do no wrong with regards to Opeth.

I think I'm going to go with Still Life and Morningrise, but that may change when I get to the record store. They carry crap in my city. They had both albums when I was there, but I may have to place an order for 1 of them, and if I do, I'll obviously be grabbin a different album by them, next in line would be Orchid....Just because no one mentioned it. (is Orchid a full album?)

Unfortunantly, due to my slow connection I didn't download anything from either album.= (

And thanks to everyone for the warm welcome, they are rare these days on most boards.

Will post soon, on my purchases.

Orchid is a full album, but it's probably the hardest to get into, I LOVE it though. It's kind of folky, and the lyrics are "loose", as you find your own meaning in them. It also has the most awesome song on it "The Apostle in Triumph", but I would still firstly recommend Morningrise and MAYH or Still Life, just go with whatever, you'll enjoy.
