As a big fan of the doom metal genre as a whole (including all of its many sub-genres and incarnations), While Heaven Wept is a no-brainer for me at ProgPower. Of Empires Forlorn is an epic doom masterpiece. As breathtaking as their category is, with their last albums, Vast Oceans Lacrymose, they showed signs of straying further away from their doom roots. And I think that if they continue to put out strong material, that's still a-okay by me. So the new song, the not-quite three minute Destroyer of Solace is up for streaming: on Blabbermouth, and elsewhere.

No real doom on this track, but whatever you'd call it, it's fucking awesome. :worship:

You can pre-order WHW's new disc for $10 through Nuclear Blast here

Hope this saves someone some $$ :)

Vast Oceans Lachrymose is an amazing album. They have officially become the band I'm looking forward to seeing the most in Atlanta.

Yeah you're right, that song certainly doesn't start with an utterly crushing doom riff or anything.

I get your point, it's not a doom album, but it's not un-doom. There's still that influence going on, even lyrically throughout the whole album.

No genre is defined by lyrics alone, I agree, but lyrics can contribute. Would you really still call something doom metal if it had lyrics about rainbows, glitter, and happy little elves frolicking through the glade and spreading happiness and joy? Doubtful.

No. That band would be called Freedom Call.

Yes, because doom metal has a very specific sound. There are christian death and black metal bands, but they're still black and death metal bands. Hell there are vegan death metal bands. There are also conservative-Republican punk bands (Ramones ring a bell, hehe?).

While I couldn't name off hand any doom metal bands with happy, empowering lyrics, I think it would actually be a really cool contrast to the music.

The Misfits also. (Certainly Jerry Only; firsthand experience there.)

After having seen WHW last weekend (my first show as i am newbie to the band, admittedly) and hearing them do one of their first songs recorded, the 15+ minute "Thus With A Kiss I Die" the band was definitely doom at it's origins. But, like all bands they are in a constant state of progression and evolution. either way, the set was awesome and i cannot wait to see them again at PP this year.

Not doom metal, but I know you're familiar with Lykathea Aflame. Their lyrics are quite uplifting (and riffs contain some major scale melodies), which is atypical of BROOTAL DEATH METAL. :D
