Next mixing context - Deadline August 12, 2006 @ Midnight

Hi,

My first post and I already like the people here
*kuch* *suckup suckup*

Seriously, I'm going to try and mix this song (If my pc can handle it)
I'm a complete newbie in this: How did you track the guitars?

I have a homemade Gyractec Gyraf pre-amp would that be sufficient for a DI signal from the guitar?
I really like the idea of being able to retrack the guitars, but if I fuck up in recording the DI there is only polishing the turd, and it doesn't get shinier :P

Thanx in advance

wait, wouldn't rerecording guitar tracks be 'cheating'?

Indeed it would, but my question was irrelevant to the mixing.
It was just on how it is done, so I can try it when I record a band ;)

Anyho anyone know the do's and the dont's?
I heard you can have problems with impedance, losing the high tones etc...

Grtz,

OK here's my version: http://student-kmt.hku.nl/~tymon/temp/Tym_ex_mix1.mp3

Though I don't really like the music and the musicians are definitely not the best to ever walk this planet, I had some great fun mixing it! I did it in 8 hours straight without taking a break so I guess I'll hate my mix tomorrow when I listen to it with fresh ears :goggly: So there's a good chance I'll post another mix soon.

I used the mp3 files by the way, as I wanted to do a quick mix but as it turned out I spent some hours...

Drums:
I don't like a triggered machine-like sound, I did however use both the kick and snare triggers but tried to make it sound as acoustic as possible. I used drumagog with samples I've collected from different places. Compression on snare, kick, toms are Waves C1. Verb is Nuendo Reverb A, simple but nice for drums imho. I changed the panning because I like the ride right and hihat left.

Guitars:
Panned 100% left, middle, 100% right. I tried a million ways of placing them in the stereo image but I think this setup works best (though they really should just ditch 1 guitar player). I used PODxt to "reamp" and mainly used the 5150 and mesa sim from the metalpack.

Bass:
I used an impulse of an Ampeg 4x10" cab and put some distortion before it.

Vox:
Just some compression.

Of course I did waaaaay more then the stuff above and used tons of plugins ;)

Pretty cool. I tried it first using Kazrogs impulsess thru my Pod for the guitars and WOW! But, those are his ......so I just used Logics' AmpPro plug-in for geetars! Mixed the kick with a D.F.H.1 Sonor kick sample and gave each guitar it's own domain:goggly: Put the drumkit thru a Altiverb 'WestLake Studio' I.R.
Lots of SSL Waves plug-ins.
:60 second sample

:Smug: GORILLA

linky no worky.......

sounds killer man... really love the snare!! and the bass too... the rest solid

I added another set of raw tracks.

I would say from what I've heard so far, CJWall's mix sounds the best to my ears.

my god i hate yousendit so damn badly... lol... i came to this thread just now and couldn't listen to nearly ANYONE's mixes due to the yousendit links having expired... MKS, it's a shame you insisted on that service.

Just in case anyone's wondering, I'm still planning to contribute a mix to the contest. I've pulled the tracks up in DP and taken inventory so to speak, but that's about as far as I've gotten, as I've been very busy with BACKMASK stuff lately (guitarist and drummer auditions, more mixes, etc.) Kinda wish the guitars were quad-tracked but I think that this can still sound full enough (some great mixes posted here already!)

Things are going great though and I will post a mix soon!
