NOV DOOM to play accoustically!

or maybe the joke just lies therein

I fully support bands going completely acoustic for a little bit of time... as long as it sounds good that, is. judging by previous 'toned down' ND material, I'm sure they won't screw this up.

I'd say I trust ND more with an acoustic album than most bands. Borknagar's acoustic album comes to mind; it basically sounds like their heavy stuff but with acoustic guitars. You can tell they're not a band set for making acoustic music. I have high hopes for ND's acoustic set... er... I probably won't see or hear it for months... but yeah, I'm excited. All I've got to look forward to is the new Ayreon album, and this new stuff from ND!

Here in Valpo we have a small venue called The Chicago Street Theater.
<snip>
I have thought several times that this would be a great venue for someone's acoustic set. So if you were in any way interested in a rehearsal show at an out of the way place that you could record and get CDs of, this could be an option. I could try to get logistical information.

Just an FYI on my own post, I contacted the theater. The series of musical shows were called "One Night Jams" and they don't do them anymore. They even got rid of the equipment.

So much for that idea.

This is really disappointing news. We were strongly considering booking this if it were possible. If we ever do an acoustic show in the US, it will NOT be in a bar setting. It has to be something special, and unique, and that theatre idea was perfect.

That certainly makes sense.
The Wheaton Grand could have been an option.
I thought that place was cool, even though no alcohol was permitted.
I always found old movie theaters to make GREAT settings for live music.

We need to find a small theatre. Holding 100 people or close to that. Real intimate. If anyone knows of a Chicago area place like that, let us know.

Sounds like one of the smaller independent theater / comedy clubs would be what you seek.

There used to be a place called the annoyance theater.
On Clark, near Addison, is the Improv Olympic. I think bands play there on occasion.
Maybe the Music Box Theater?

There is also that one theater next to Reckless (Lakeshore or something?)

found a review by vera of the acoustic gig, translated it a bit for everybody who doesn't speak dutch (or, rather, flemish? anybody of the flemish people who can tell me what "beklijvend" means? never ever heard that word, you weirdos! speak proper dutch, ffs! :P )

After a short break, the impressive Americans of Novembers Doom take their place at the narrow stage. No keys here, but a lot of beautiful classical guitar work that comes right from the heart, but displays the skill of a bunch of music school musicians. Novembers Doom have a number of songs in their bulky back catalogue that lend itself perfectly for an acoustic performance. 'The Dead Leaf Echo' from the masterpiece 'The Pale Haunt Departure' is the beginning of almost an hour of pure magic. The sound of the guitars is warm and bright, the voice of Paul Kuhr is pure, intense, and - in this case - story-telling. No outbursts with grunts and heavy guitars, but the song oozes an amazing power without electrical amplification as well. 'Autumn Reflection' is of course a classic that made you be able to hear the sound of a falling pin in the otherwise so noisy pub. The sober versions never lose their dark doom character, I would even go as far as to say that they sound even more depressive and touching in this form because you can hear the lyrics better in this way. They go back in time, to 1997 with the touching 'For Every Leave That Falls'. Very Doomy AND even with grunts at the end. Paul dedicates 'Through a Child's Eyes' to Kelly, who's having her birthday. Here the band displays the same classiness as Opeth. A next highligh is 'They were Left To Die'. What an excitement is being built up in this song, even in this naked performance! Pure Magic! Nick Cave meets Swans. 'Twilight Innocence' is a song from the last album 'The Novella Reservoir' and the lyrics that are adressed straight to Paul's little daughter give me goosebumps. But Paul's wife is there at this short tour as well. After this they will stay at the old continent for visits to Paris and Amsterdam. After the beauty of 'Silent Tomorrow' and 'In Memories Past' the band dedicates these 'If Forever' to her. 'Leaving This' - with an oh so beautiful vocal harmony' - closes this unique concert dat can very well be called one of the highlights of this year. An experience that can barely be described in words, unless you recognize something in this beautiful review because you were there.

There's nothing set in stone yet, tour/show-wise, for the U.S. Our main focus right now is to mix and edit this DVD and get it out as soon as possible in 2008. And hopefully we'll really get the ball rolling with writing new material as well, with hopes of getting into the recording studio again sometime in 2008 as well. These are the tentative plans right now, we'll see how things play out. I'm sure we'll be performing live in 2008, we'll post info as soon as we can. Hopefully soon we might have some exciting news to post, but I can't say anything more about it just yet.

Hey Antzor,

Here's a translation from a weirdo.:goggly:
Beklijvend means more or less 'lasting in memorie '
and in dutch it means 'in de herinnering blijven hangen'
According to vandale(dutch dictionaries) website

thanks man, next time i go to this weird place again i might be able to understand something, more or less :P

a friend thaught me the meaning of the word 'chupke' and said that is why those lollies are called chupa chups....

'rare jongens, die belgen!' ;)

Did they ever announce the name of the live DVD set?

P.S. I just got My Dying Bride's Sinamorata(sic) in the mail, and even though it's great, don't do what they did man... Try to make your menus much less cluttered, and if you have say 6 music videos, don't have 2 per page and make the person manually click through 3 pages of videos to see the one they want. :P

And have a "Setup" menu for selecting subtitle, audio (5.1 or 2.0) instead of making a second menu after the person hits play. When I hit play, I expected it to PLAY! I hit it, run to the couch, sit down... just to find out I have to go back and hit play again for it to actually start.

I think you guys should go for clean, sleek... white ghostness... Like a heavenly DVD menu, hahah....

But hey, it's all up to you guys in the end and this is really just a whiny rant on my part about how some DVD menus are designed. :P

Also the music videos were freakishly intimate. I know exactly what Stainthorpe's face looks like now, down to the tiniest detail. >.>

Overly dramatic...

He lays on the ground a lot....

.....but brilliant music. :)
