Favela of My Dismay
ITT of NP: We reach to our shelves for some much needed re-acquaintance. Only albums one has not heard in 3 years qualify. Our Gugsian esque collections are treasure troves of forgotten music. Lets shed some light upon these hateful hymns and reminisce back to a time where music stood as the catalyst to our livelihoods. :dopey:

Also, post whether or not said album was as good or in some cases as "shitty", as you recall.

I'm glad I stuck it out with Nokturnal Mortum. Thankfully when I had to repurchase Goat Horns I found a copy for maybe $15.

Deftones did not age well. I gave them a whirl after a decade. Gross! Terrible stuff. Probably always was, I just didn't know better.

The Locust Years by Hammers of Misfortune. I stopped listening to that a few months after it came out, last year found it glorious.

I gave away about 40 CDs a few months ago. Awful stuff for the most part. Almost gave away some newer King Diamond. Didn't.

Fucking glad, because The Puppet Master kicks fucking ass. Doubt I'll regret ditching Miss Machine by Dillinger Escape Plan.

1st up - Rudra's Brahbaklava Primordial I

8.5/10; More kick ass than I recall, all hail Ali!

This track needs to go though. This is something you would expect to be played in the background while being served a plate of chicken curry. Perhaps if it was placed at the beginning or middle of the album, rather than towards the end, it may have meshed better.

i wasnt really ever too into them, but they were a part of my metal genesis. i was drawn to the heavy guitars and screamy vocals, i hadnt really heard anyone else scream with as much intensity before. i still like a handful of tracks from the first two, but the rest sucks. HOWEVER i saw them in 98 or 99 at the phoenix in petaluma and it is definitely top 5 most insane fucking shows i've ever attended. and i've attended a lot of shows.

I'd say two songs from the first, one from the second, and one or two from White Pony, and then you have a pretty enjoyable EP to listen to once or twice a decade. They were a damn fine live band though, absolutely.

Dusty Musical Tomes Revisited: Episode 1

God Dethoned "The Grand Grimoire"

Backstory: I picked this up after reading a review that called it "Angel Corpse meets Crown of Thorns." (This was before they got slapped with cease and desist order from a shitty Christian hardcore band and became known simply as The Crown.) The only real local music store, Gopher Sounds, pretty much knew me as the metal dude on sight. One of the managers would actually check with me on things he should order. Anyway...
I was starting my first senior year in college, was working for a rental car place where my job largely consisted of cleaning up after horrible shit people did in rental cars and blasting music all day. No one cared if I showed up hung over, and most days I'd work five or six hours, go to classes, come home and sleep two or thee hours, do some (minimal) homework and go and party. So I was buying CDs left and right, but this one really caught my attention. It was a clear mix of death and thrash metal with just enough black metal. Too many of the Gothenburg bands had turned all melody and no balls. God Dethroned just hit that perfect mix of speed, aggression, riffs, and blasphemy to make me smile. I was even fortunate enough to see them live the following year, February of 2000, as they opened up for Cannibal Corpse (along with Diabolic and Hate Eternal). The blew every other band off the stage that night. Even my fucking hipster classmates who showed up for ironic points were actually impressed.

Until tonight, I have not listened to this album in over seven years.
Revisitation: this fucking owns still. It's not quite the monster it was then, and honestly The Crown "Deathrace King" is the ultimate example of this combination of styles, but it holds up. I still prefer the raw, darker tone on this one over "Blood Blasphemy" even if the production is far too cold and sterile. I give it a solid 8 out of 10 stars.

Let's revisit Absu's The Third Storm of Cythraul...

Never been a big Absu fan, so it's not too much of a wonder that an album like this can sleep undisturbed on its shelf for 5+ years. It's still great as ever though, a cluster of sheer energy and fast-paced epicness. That song was on a compilation a friend gave me back in 1997 or so, which pretty much got me into metal.
And that Kris Verwimp artwork never ceases to haunt me. Kris Verwimp + blue lightning = ace combination

^Okay, this actually is sounding much better to me than the last time I listened to it. Oddly I bought my current copy of Herr Moose. Huh, wacky.

Blut aus Nord - Odinist

i remember making a post in another forum about what kind of metal should there be. i mentioned something along the lines of summoning with darker, more industrial-y type sounds, but like a dunce, i completely did not think of that band; it took another user to remind me of this. chose to revisit Odinist after about a three+ year absence (i think), forgot how awesome that one was.

this song was my "wake-up call" so to speak:

You should check out Spektr if you want black metal with industrial weirdness.

Damn near unlistenable stuff in a lot of ways, but when it rules, it rules hard.

Today's dust off - Borknagar's The Olden Domain

7/10, not as good as I recall. Though I was in a pissy mood from being roused by a neighboring school function. Stupid kids dosy doe-ing, whilst shit fuck teacher blared over megaphone like Jimmy Hart. Needless to say I wasnt in the right temperament to listen to these "wimpy" vox. The Olden has grown Molden. Perhaps Ill give the S/T another glance later in the week.

Fuck children. That album rules. So does the self-titled.

Admittedly, I never really invested much time into them even after hearing all the hype in the past years. So after being impressed with their new song "Unspoken", I revisited Static Tensions and am fucking LOVING this stuff. This is fucking GOLD!
