That is a shame about Johns, even if he was going to retire anyway. It would have obviously been better if he'd been able to go on his own terms.

Andrew Johns is obviously a great player, but I've never understood this greatest-player-in-history thing. Maybe it's because I never played the game, I don't know.

Only realised today that I never watched a game in which Wally Lewis played. I didn't really develop an interest in league until 1999.

I do think they've gone overboard a bit, I agree. But we're all lucky we aren't from Melbourne. Everytime someone retires from AFL down there it's like the world has come to an end.

Joey is a great player and he is a massive loss to the game. I think the more than anything, the reason the big deal is being made it about it, is because he didn't retire on his own terms, it was forced. This combined with the fact that his friends basically run the rugby league media, it's trying to cheer him up a bit.

That said though, Fittler was better and didn't get a send off that size.

Joey is a great player, and has had a huge influence on the game.. And the effect Joey has on a team is incredible, no modern player has as big an effect. Lockyer is also a fantastic player, in many ways I reckon he's better than Johns. Certainly his form in the last few years has been on par with Johns, although Johns has had injury....
