So, here's a little review of last weekend's KIT festival ....
Hawk called me late last week he wasn't feeling to well and had an important meeting Sunday, so he couldn't come with us...Sad, but there's allways a next KIT
Me and my buddy Henri (another Dutchman with the same name that is) left off to Germany on Friday around noon. Traffic was pretty good untill we ran into a large traffic jam, just before our arrival place...well, took us about 7 houres to get there, checking in the Hotel and meeting some fellow Belgian friends. We went into town and hade a great "Wienerschnitzel" in a local restaurant that by accident had a "classic rock" theme night there...COOL !
Saturday morning we did some sight seeing, the environment and buildings are very very nice indeed...
than off to the metal market at KIT, starting at 11 AM...There again were some gems to find, my friend spend a few 100 $'s on rare vinyl, I just purchased all KIT DVD's available from last years...
4 PM the concerts started and opener was German Band
Messenger. that did a very good opening the festival. The play oldschool Heavy Metal, a bit on the EPIC side. Vocalist is very good for German standards, not a heavy accent or so, and he has a very high reach. Most of the songs are not so original like "Kill the DJ (Heavy Metal is the Law)" but still a very strong opener.
Second was the US band
Arctic Flame. I didn't know them and they suprised me. They play a very nice blend of modern and oldschool Metal. Very sharp vocals and great musicians. The second guitarist wasn't able to fly over and they still sounded very good with the 4 of them. Looking for some Arctic Flame material now !!
After Arctic Flame German band
Warhammer went on stage. Probably through some connections they got there as the band is completely worthless. They try to sound a bit like Celtic Frost but, haha, failed miserably. Worse band I ever saw on KIT, but organiser Oliver is excused because the rest of the bands were very good withouth exception
Than came
WOLF and they did deliver the goods!!! They were called upon stage by a howling crowd (link see my earlier post here..) and from the first note on they hit us like a ton of bricks ; no slow songs, all up-tempo stuff from all the albums. "This is how metal is supposed to be played!" were the wise words of the guitar player, not too often such words can be taken serious, well, here they can !! Vocals are really awesome, they have that special touch and sound just as clear as on CD. They also enjoy themselves and were very gratefull towards the very enthousiastic public.I hope all of you get to see them once. One of my favorit concerts ever !!
After Wolf
Onslaught got on stage and again , a very good gig hit us. This time some very heavy oldschool thrash. Not too many English thrashbands are good, but Onslaught certainly is an exception on that. I only had hoped Wolf got the extra time to play in stead of Onslaught. 45 minutes of Thrash are enough while I would have like to see an extra 30 minutes of Wolf...
Ross the Boss was next, replacing Flotsam & Jetsam , who canceled the show unfortunatly. We saw the Ross the Boss band last KIT already and now they played a different setlist, including my favorit "Metal Daze". Almost all material from the first 3 Manowar albums, who Ross left 18 years now. All I can say is that this band probably is nicer to watch than what Manowar does these days !! Nice moment was when the Sacred Steel vocalist crawled on stage and was allowed to sing a full song next to his god Ross the Boss. and he did a damn good job too !!
Headliner this time was
Heir Apparent. HA is one of my favorit 80's bands and I never got to see them live back than. Well, all I can say is ; please you guys in the US, cherish this band as your nation's gold!! They were one of the founders of modern progmetal and their 80's stuff in my opinion can compete with 99% of modern progressive metal. The old songs still sound as fresh as they have could been written today. The musicians are exeptionally good, including the young drummer (with mohawk hair) and keyboard player. Vocalist and guitars are simply awesome. guitar player Terry Gorle has a very special style that makes HA sound very unique, he kinda seems to play solo's throughout the whole songs... The vocalist hits notes were Geoff Tate misses or avoids them. Bass and drum sections are complex and the keys fill up the sound perfect when Terry hits the strings. "Sound of Silence" from Simon & Garfunkel was covered in a masterful way, giving a great metal twist to it !! Still progressive, they do sound very heavy at times (like on "tear down the walls"). An awesome bands wich I thank the organisation for bringing them over... Now ALL send mails to get them over to ProgPower USA next year !! Last pic is Terry and I... I'm so happy to get these pics with my 80's heroes lately !! (explaining the stupid grin on my face, haha...)
So, to summarize; this was simply a great weekend... Wolf and Heir Apparent were amongst my favorit concerts ever. And guys, if you see next years line up don't you wanna fly over ???
