'official live sound thread'

Same as you guys, I generally only boost for attack on the drums and use subtractive EQ everywhere else. I get tons of low end on floor toms with an Audix D4, I love that mic on floor toms, sometimes it even seems like too much low end and I need to reign in it.

I've used the same approach with kick drums no matter what mic I end up using. Find the "click" I like and boost there as needed, a little if it's something laid back and alot of it's something like metal. Be as aggressive as you want with the EQ. I pull out some mid range around 400hz-ish and use the low shelf to control the low end overall. I always gate the kick so that it's punchy and tight. I've a friend who uses a beta 91a and never gates his kicks, he reckons it doesn't need it.

I've stopped gating snares at most gigs now, unless I know the band has no ghost notes or side stick/cross stick stuff. Tired of bypassing the gate and missing some hits. If it's a band I know and do alot then I'll bypass as the parts are coming up.

Worked with Black Dahlia Murder, All That Remains, Machine Head, and Dethklok this week. If anyone is interested in gear etc, let me know. I took a bunch of gear porn cellphone pics but do not want to post just in case it's frowned upon by the acts/venue. The most fun I've had working here yet - finally some RIFFS.

One interesting fact is that all the bands used the Radial JDX on their amps. Sounded great.

Pretty sure Killswitch are using the Jet City cab sim'd DI on tour aswell. Would be interesting to use one of these things in the studio to see how good they sound!

How did you like the sound of the Laney? I had the Tony Iommi signature a while back and really liked it, but never really got around to using it for any projects etc...

Sounded great to me. Both guys were using a Laney Ironheart. Here's a vid from the show, the audio isn't super high quality but it's not typical shit cell phone quality

I often get the request for deep sounding (floor) toms. Except for an +15db boost at 60hz, does anyone have some suggestions for mic placement and EQ to achieve a deep sound that will give drummers a boner? I normally use Sennheiser E604 mics.

And what are your EQ recipes for kickdrums? Depending on the musicstyle i normally start with boosting with the high shelf to get some definition. I use the high mid EQ knob to search for the beater sound arround 3k to 6k and then boost it. Then searching for a frequency to cut between 200-1k and then use the low shelf to balance the low-end to fit within the mix (normally between -3db or +3db).

When i'm visiting shows and other sound-engineers soundcheck, they often have a kickdrum that sounds ugly on its own but great in the mix.

It's kinda hard to describe, but i'm looking for some different flavours to EQ kickdrums.
Deep floor tom sound is all in the tuning. Also, use a kick drum mic.

Do you guys know how to make a proper click track in logic? I've tried routing, but apparently you need an interface with more than one output, but I've tried that and logic doesn't seem to know how to send to more than one out. Any help here? Do I need an ASIODriver(Dont know if they work on mac)

What kick drum placements do you normally use on metal bands with mics like the Beta 52, D112,etc?

I normally use the "Mic capsule cupping/aligning with the drumhead and pointing to the beater-technique". But I want to try out positioning the mic inside the kickdrum close to the beater to achieve a better/nicer click. Something like this, but the main problem is: How do i get my mic in this position when the kickdrum doesn't have a porthole on the right place, and is it even a good idea to do this live?

I normally just stick a mic in the soundhole pointing towards the beater. If you're not able to get sufficient click from that placement then the drummer isn't hitting his kick hard enough, or has the drum over dampened. That being said I do love having a 91 right inside the kick, picks up the clicky stuff REALLY well.

yeah beta 91 right inside close to the beater skin and a D112/D6 style mic just inside the port hole. If you dont have a 91 then try a sm57, not inside the drum but on the other side of the kick drum facing where the beater hits the skin with the rear of the mic facing the snare to minimise bleed. phase reversal is a must here with 2 kick mics. works live or in the studio.
hi pass the sm57 so you just get the click, also helps with phase between the two mics.

I'm starting a production company and just bought my first rig.

Dynacord Cobra2 with 2 extra JBL STX828s dual 18" subs. I'm picking it all up tomorrow. So excited I feel like a kid on christmas morning

For monitors I got 6 Yamaha DSR112 wedges and 2 QSC KW153 for sidefills.

Consoles, for now, are Behringer X32, until I can afford an SC48 or otherwise. I got one for FOH and one for MONS and can plug all my inputs into the monitor console and run my inputs over a single cat5 via aes50 to FOH. Pretty awesome stuff.

I bought an A&H mixwiz for smaller gigs.

Nice rig.

How do you find the Behringer? Crazy amount of features for the price but I've found some of the other "lower end" digital desks to have features but be a pain to work on, how does it fare?

It's awesome. Sounds great, super easy to use. iPad app rules too now that they are at version 2.0.. pinch and grab EQ to change your gain, frequency and Q

Congrats! That's a badass rig... those wedges are easily the best powered monitors I've ever gotten to use

That's good to hear I got a demo of them but you never really know how they will fair til you have them on a stage

Sounds like a great rig. Those mixwizards are actually really great little desks for such a small footprint.

Pretty much the only 16 channel console with a decent 2 band sweepable EQ.. although the Behringer X16 that is gonna come out at NAMM might make me regret my purchase we'll see

I actually got to check out one of the Behringer X32's in person a few weeks ago and it seems like a solid piece.

I was using a Yamaha M7CL and now have an Avid Venue SC48.
We've switched sound companies and monitors are now EAW LA212/LA215 - I am really digging them. FOH subs are Meyer and we have bigger A-Line tops, all foh sounds a little better to me so far, but since I'm on monitors, I don't get out there very much. I hope they book more 'heavy' acts...

I work at a venue with 2 profiles I love mixing on them.
