ask me anything and I'll answer!!

Since there probably will be a guitar rig question:

The guitars are ESP Eclipse with EMG to ENGL Savage played through a Elmwood 2x12 cabinet loaded with V30. 2 mics, one SM57 and one Beta58.
Well, I would kind of like to know eeeverything... *signs off soul to Mephisto*
Aaaanyway, what mic preamps were used? Drums, bass, vox? Also, how do the powerball and savage compare? I'm considering getting a fireball, but I love this tone (however, the savage is a bit too pricey for me)...

The preamps where the ones used in the Mackie D8b. The bass i direct out from a EBS Fafner amphead into focusritepreamps. On the drums i triggered every drum with ddrum triggers. The samples are from DKFH. The snare is mixed 75% real snare and 25% sample(the snare ringout is mostly the sample). Kick is 100%sample. Toms are 50/50.

The vocals are recorded with a ADK A51. Cheap mics but sounds great for the price.

Easy to compare the powerball and the savage. The distortion in the powerball is my personal favourite but I wanted something more aggressive, and the savage could provide that. Go to www.subcyde.com and check out demo 2005 which was recorded with my powerball. You can get aggressive with it but I wanted a little less marshall in the sound. I've heard great things about the fireball too!

If you want more details just ask, I have no secrets...

I have some questions for you...

In the guitars...EMG 81 or 85 in the bridge?

For the drums, exactly how were they mic'd and recorded? I see that you mentioned that you used ddrum triggers on all the drums. Were these triggers sent into a module like an Alesis D4/DM5? If not, did you use a program like Drumagog or Aptrigga? Finally, how many tracks did you actually use total for the drums?

For mixing/mastering...was in all done in the box using various software?

Finally, are you still using the Mackie D8B and MOTU 2408 set-up? If you are, I'm curious to know which verison of th 2408 you have (PCI 324 or 424 card)?

EMG 81 in the bridge, 60 in the neck.
The triggers where recorded directly and I used Aptrigga to apply the samples. Other mics on the set where a beta 58 on the snare, and matched ADK 51 pair for the OH. hihat was 57 and so was the ride. So no hitech microphones there... I think it was like 12-13 tracks of drums...

Everything is mixed/mastered in Logic 7.0 with no external plugins. Just the ones that came with logic(except aptrigga then of course)

I just use the d8b for the recording. THe motu 2408 was the new PCI 424 and it has never failed on me!!

Subcyde!!! Thanks for posting the new demo. I never heard of you guys before, but really like your music. Kick ass stuff! I went to your website and downloaded the older demos too. My iPod has been on the "Subcyde Shuffle" ever since... Keep up the killer work!

Cool man thanks!!!!

sounds great man \m/

I love the guitar sound on this years demo and last years. I probably prefer the new one done with the savage 120 because it's more midrangey and smooth which is more my bag :)

damnit I've got engl gas again :tickled:

thanks for sharing!!

OMG you wont believe it, but it was Altec computer monitors.... :yuk:

Since I've left my studio I haven't had the chance to mix in reference monitors...

That's so funny, because we've mixed on a Altec Lansing surround sound computer system quite a few times...:tickled:

I listened to the 2005 demo and I must say I like this one much better... not that there's anything wrong with the 2005 one, but the guitar tone on 2006 is more to my liking... a bit darker... sounds more mesa-like... and I'm still wondering how to get that tone without spending a ridiculous amount of money... for the money the mesas and savages go around here, I'm almost in bogner uberschall territory, and that's no. 1 on my wish list (according to the samples I've heard so far, never heard one live)...
Anyway, more questions about the demo :) ... I'm interested in the ambience fx (reverb, delay) you used for everything... and what was the processing chain for the bass gtr... it always sounds so full... carries the mix imo...

I know what you mean, I've tried to dial in as great sound with my POD XT at home(can be heared at www.facingdeath.se). It's hard...

the only reverb used on the mix are on the snare, toms and vocals. Just a notch on the OHs and Kick, just to make them blend in.

When processing the bass you just compress it like a motherfucker... Use multiband on the low end to get rid of the peaks and raise the weaker notes.
Multiband compressor is what makes the bass sound so full all the time.
