Found these on my comp, don't know why I took them lol. They are from an old drum tracking session at my house. For some reason I thought I would post 'em up...

Yeah, my guitars. 70's reissue JBass, EC-1000, 50th Ann. Fender Strat, 2001 MIM Fender Strat and my Gibson Faded Explorer on the far right. Not in the shot is my HellRaiser C7, Fender 25th Anniversary USA Strat and 60's Gibson Hummingbird acoustic. Actually, the hats came out great. Articulate, clear, barely any bleed (shocked myself haha) and needed hardly any processing, just a HPF to kill off the kick/tom rumble and a little dip to get what little snare was bleeding in.

I'm not sure if you were trying to imply this, but gain isn't going to affect bleed (it wont raise bleed any more than it raises direct signal). And he just said there was surprisingly little bleed.

Fuck hahaha, my bad, I didn't read the entire thing:rolleyes:

It's from a rock band tracking session, I posted a clip in the RMM forum I believe but:

There is an mp3 of their best song IMO. Just a radio-friendly rock band, not metal so beware, haha. And because of the positioning the hi-hat source is pretty loud, so there doesn't need to be much gain, in fact I think I used the -20dB pad on my 8Pre on the HH channel. Again, no, there is barely any bleed in the HH mic, just typical rumble from kick/toms and hardly any OH/ride bleed, mainly just a slight bit of snare which was easily eq'ed out with a small notch in it's fundamental freq. I mean, it's nothing special, just something new I tried, came out well. I think I will continue to try that positioning. Most people have tried to tell me it should sound bad or be a pain to work with in that position but I gotta say this is one of the best HH sounds I've ever gotten and it was extremely easy to process on top of that so... There is more than one way to skin a cat, as they say ;)

And, as a side note, this is the kind of stuff you have to work on to make money consistently ;) To be honest though, I think I much prefer rock bands like this over metal bands as far as recording is concered. While I prefer metal, musically, the production side of everything involving metal is just such a pain in the ass whereas this session was a gigantic breeze.

I'll agree this... I think it's that it's easier to 'connect' with the music when it's got a great deal of melody and some more personal-ish lyrics than in metal where it's mostly FULL FUCKING SPEED AHEAD the entire time with lyrics that most closely resemble middle-school poetry. When you've gotta listen to the material for days on end, a bit of melody and catchiness goes a LONG way!

I couldn't agree more! I'm currently recording/producing a compilation CD with 15 bands of all different styles of music. The rock type bands are have been much easier to work with (and edit!).

The track you posted sounds great! Are all the drums natural or did you blend in any samples?

100% Slate on the snare and I'm getting the air from the OH mics. The drummer thinks the snare is all his, shhhh ;) The kick is his with another sample I had, but it's blended in for thump because his kick was all slap, and the drummer wanted a "meshuggah kick sound" :yikes: Toms are all natural, triggers were there for backup, just in case, although they are nothing to write home about.

Jeff actually said something earlier and I didn't realize it, I kinda made the drums processed towards a more metal sound than rock  I'm going to copy the project and start from step 1 again and see what comes up.

Thanks for the kind words guys, really appreciate it. I dig how it came out, but I'm always up to make it better.

Now THAT really surprises me, considering it's one seriously present mic - I'd think it'd make hats piercing-city!

If you want the snare air from the OH, do you still put a hipass filter on them? but at lower so that only the kick if filtered out?
