Well Opeth has a shitton of classic material, even if you don't like the direction they're going. I can even see the appeal of Devin & his many projects (even if they're not for me).

But the whole listening to shit just because it's perceived to be "cool" to be avant-garde, man, I'll never get that shitz.

Swans on the other hand -- as great a band they might be, they shouldn't be liked as much as they are. It doesn't make sense, not in metal forums anyway. Not sure if this makes sense...

Sort of, but not really.

They don't really play a certain style. If I had to come up with one I'd say dark-dreamy-experimental-pop-orgasm music.

They are definitely in a league of their own. And I STILL haven;t fully wrapped my head around much of their stuff.

Swans are nearly impossible to categorize. i'm not saying this in some sort of pseudo-intellectual way like they are on some higher plane than other mere mortal music (although i suppose that is true ), but they were a group that simply did not allow any borders to interfere with what they created.

and yeah, people that listen to certain groups just to be cool are, well, lame fucking douchebags. i can understand if you're 14 and just want to fit in with a crowd to feel a sense of belonging, but once you've moved beyond puberty it's time to let that ship sail.
