Ballet Deviare, Inc is a contemporary ballet company in New York City that performs their work to metal.
The ballet is a not-for-profit created for the purpose of pushing the boundaries of ballet, with the intention of preserving ballet as a cultural institution. The organization is the brainchild
of Laura Kowalewski, who began training in classical ballet at the age of three.
Ballet Deviare, incorporated in November 2003, was conceived as a vehicle through which Kowalewski could challenge, and hopefully break some of the restrictive standards of balletas an art form and as an industry.
Working with diverse musical scores, Ballet Deviare hopes to create an interest in ballet in those who lie beyond its normal audience. For example the Company has fine-tuned its ability to perform contemporary ballet works to musical scores normally regarded as heavy metal or extreme music. Kowalewski has choreographed movements to fit an extremely fast tempo and uneven phrasing of this specific musical genre.
