so, here is what i think of each one...

1) orchid - humble and cool.

2) morningrise - perfect and it fits with the music. i always listen to the album and imagine that i am in that place, inside that house, between that trees.

3) my arms your hearse - good work too and it fits with the music...like morningrise...no more words.

4) still life - another great work...i'm not so much into that color red and with that...i think it's a church in the back cover....by the way...i like it.

5) blackwater park - the front cover is ridiculous...it's the worse (worst) ever...how could you dudes like that? just compare with the other opeth covers and it's pretty clear that this cover is shit...the back one is ok...i like that trees inside the mist.

6) deliverance - thanks god! but i have a complain: did you realize that sometimes (or always...it's up to you) the opeth's logo doesn't fit with the cover? just take a look to the new cover and agree with me...maybe sometimes it would be better the cover without logo...like they did once with my arms your hearse.

I think the deliverance cover is really spectacular and my favorite so far. As for your opinion on the Bwp cover, I think it is a bit lacking in a central idea, but it fits the atmosphere of the music very well and that is all that matters.

Still Life cover reminds me of the mona lisa kind of. It has a kind of Leonardo Da Vinci/ Raphael portrait kind of classical artwork feel to it. It could have been from the renaissance or something. Thats why I like it.

Not based on the music at all the ranking goes like this

Orchid - 7
Morningrise - 9
MAYH - 5
Still Life - 9
Blackwater Park - 10
Deliverance - 10

My main problem with the Opeth album covers is that they are so inconsistent. That bothers me about both the Morningrise and the MAYH cover. Both have a nice looking front cover in my opinion, fitting to the music, but when you turn the jewelcase around they have terrible back pictures. Morningrise has a bunch of green leaves that totally don't fit with the black and white front cover, and MAYH has some kind of green blurred photo on the background, again totally not matching with the front of the cover.

Orchid is a little too cheesy for my tastes, with the picture of the flower and the silhouette shot on the back. But it's an ok cover.

Morningrise has a very nice front cover but the rest of the art doesn't match with it. They should have kept the back black and white as well.

MAYH has a nice abstract and vague front cover. Not anything special but not bad either. But again the back of the CD looks terrible. The booklet is pretty nice though.

Still Life is a nice looking cover overall. Though again I find that the front and the back clash. Front is a painted cover, back is a photo. Why?

Blackwater Park is by far the most consistent cover of all the Opeth albums. It gives off the same vibe throughout the entire artwork, front, back, and booklet. So overall I think that one has the best artwork.

Deliverance looks very good so far. It has a nice bleak atmosphere to it.

Out of 10...

Orchid - 6 [Pretty basic and not especially imaginitive, but cool in its way
Morningrise - 9 [Dark, atmospheric, creative, and beautiful. It fits the album perfectly and there are few better album covers in my collection]
MAYH - 2 [It looks like someone tried to photocopy their ass and did a poor job of it]
Still Life - 7 [Really cool, but it doesn't grab me like some other album covers have]
BWP - 7 [Interesting and creative, and very Opeth-ish, but not super-exciting. The picture under the CD tray could get an 8 or a 9]
Deliverance - 10 [Unique, heavily atmospheric, beautiful, artistic, and exceptionally evocative. One of the best album covers I've seen]
