Opeth Mashup: Opeth vs 50 Cent

I'm not a fan of rap or hiphop, but it's not because I'm only into metal or any of that closed minded shit.

the only problem with hip hop i have is the lack of real instrumentations - drums just dont cut it for me. its the same for metal, the most popular metal acts/rappers are always shit, but the less known and more underground groups sound much better. as an example, linkin park are one of the more popular acts but they are pretty shitty, its the same with fiddy and all these other guys

im pretty sure most rappers have no idea about time signatures or any sorts of music theory, but theres probably a few that do. if you were really that interested in music youd probably be playing an instrument though

so you are asserting that there would be more rappers that know music than metal musicians? i disagree

no, but to be a metal musician it usually requires playing an instrument. very few rappers have i seen playing any instruments. and playing an instrument raises the probability of learning music

you asserted that you were looking for rappers that use odd rhythms and meter. i said most would not know anything about music or music theory, and postulated that most metal artists would know more. i didnt say vocalists only, i said metal artists, im sure there are a few rappers that can work a keyboard or a synth

metal guys that dont like rap because it doesnt sound anything like metal, and vice versa. its the same for large variations inside metal as well. if you show a big fan of deep purple or iron maiden a song by nile, most of the time they will not dig the screaming. i dont think rapping is very popular among metalheads, but i also agree that the lack of instruments is a major downfall.

i cannot really comment because like i said earlier i do not listen to rap regularly and have no real knowledge of it, at least compared to other more 'musical' styles.

i think there is a fair share of close minded metal heads that exist, but same holds true for every genre. i know for a fact that alot of jazzers wont even touch death metal simply because of the vocals and distortion, and dont understand why anyone would listen to 'angry, angst music'. but i also think that alot of metalheads simply just dont like rap, the same way they just simply dont like country or classical or bluegrass styles. nothing wrong with that, theres only an issue if people arent willing to experiment and try new styles. the transition from metal to rap is kinda harsh i admit

Depends on the screamer really, rap is monotone yet screamers use actual notes or pitches when they do their screams. Of course you can have monotone screams, and death growls. And a lot of rappers are doing the "talk singing" thing too, where it at least sounds like they're trying to put half of an ass into the song. :)

well he plays sax, there you go. most rappers dont

also, rap is not monotone, any more than death metal growling or screaming is

The mashup was horrible, but I do acknowledge that some rap music is alright. It's just that 50 cent isn't.

I wouldn't say it was horrible.

Not that I particularly liked it, but I mean I respect the effort involved.

Why even bother comparing extreme progressive death metal with some mainstream rap group in the first place? You guys are total nuts. :P

Because they're both music I guess.
lol

Look, before I even got to exprience or even listen to metal overall, rap was all there was, or so I thought at that time. I even heard "screamo" rap, and I don't mean nu-metal, the sad excuse of a metal sub-genre.

I do not consider rap or hip hop, whatever you want to call it, actual beautiful music. I have learned that it requires little to no talent at all. Do you even look at how simplistic and typical the lyrics are? I fail to see how rap is music. The only material required is a recording studio, DJ, and some "special stuff" in order to mix the stuff up. People can mix it however much they want, and guess what? The mainstream eats it up like a bunch of clowns. Why? Because the companies put those rap groups out there, not caring for their talent, as long as they get their stupid money. I know it is NOT about making music, no matter how close to "political" or "realistic" it gets. Sadly, it is just for the money.

Never EVER dare to compare both. God, you are insulting a great genre of music.

Wait a minute, I shouldn't be saying this to you, this should be said to the guy who created the stupid mash-up. Jesus, people like that. Still, 50 Cent is nowhere near as what Opeth is. Two different genres, two different sounds.
